Portrait spies

If the portraits in Dumbledore's office could travel to the ministry to check on happenings there, then why couldn't Voldemort and co just use the portraits in Grimmauld place for information? I'm sure that many DE families would keep the same pictures in their houses... Do you reckon the portraits had a good laugh about that?

Couldn't the portraits only move between their own portraits?

If they had other portraits they could visit those.

I didn't see your same and that's where I disagree. I don't think many DE families would have the same portraits at all.

Most were pure blood...so most would be interrelated. It stands to reason.

Re: Portrait spies

Maybe portraits can only move within frames under the same dwelling and Hogwarts Headmaster's are special in that they can move to their second frame no matter where they are placed. Pictures/chocolate frog cards seem to act differently than portraits, since they don't talk.

Where does it specify that only Headmaster's portraits are granted this option?

Re: Portrait spies

It doesn't. I said "Maybe..."

The books only go out of their way to mention that the Hogwarts Headmasters portraits are connected specially through two frames, one at Hogwarts and the other in a place of the Headmaster's choosing. What would be special about this fact if all portraits coukd go anywhere they like? It only signals that there is something specifically special about the Headmasters portraits.

Re: Portrait spies

That was more the Room of Requirement connecting to the portrait. Less the portrait's ability. And did Ariana travel from frame to frame? Or did she stay within the same frame and travel down a tunnel?

Re: Portrait spies

I honestly can't recall. I'm fairly certain that all portraits may travel from frame to frame, however...
I also made a separate theory about portraits in general here: viewtopic.php?f=23&t=59290
Several of those questions have been answered for me since then, but many still remain unknown, if you'd like something else to chew on.

Re: Portrait spies

There was no mention of Ariana traveling to any other frame. She walked away from the frame as if down a tunnel, and returned with Neville. It was special magic of the Room of Requirement.

There is no mention of any portrait traveling between dwelling except for Hogwarts Headmasters. The only other indication I can remember of a traveling subject is Dumbledore leaving his Chocolate Frog card. But I imagine Chocolate Frog cards, and possibly all developed photos, are governed under different magic than portraits. The other Hogwarts portraits never mention leaving Hogwarts.

Portraits in Hogwarts are shown sharing frames with each other, but the only ones shown outside of the Hogwarts frame are the Headmasters. Thus my theory that on Hogwarts Headmasters portraits have the ability to leave the school. And by extension, portraits other than these can move from frame to frame, but only within the structure they dwell.

I have no other information or explanation to add for this theory.

Re: Portrait spies

It's also worth mentioning that, really the only portraits we see at all are those at Hogwarts, Ariana, and Phineas Nigellus who also resides at Hogwarts. There is no way of making a solid theory for something when there is little to no reference material for comparison...

Re: Portrait spies

Dumbledore makes mention of this in OotP in the chapter where Arthur is attacked. He says that Dilys and Fortescue(i think. Dont quote me.on that) were important enough wizards that they have portraits at two places. It would stand to reason that if you were important enough you would have two portraits to go through.

You'd have to be important in two different spheres. As for family I don't think they do portraits of people beyond immediate family, ie parents, maybe grandparents.

In a huge manor like the Malfoys, there is probably more then a few portraits.

Re: Portrait spies

I always suspected that each portrait in Dumbledore's office, while some of them had portraits in places like the Ministry, St. Mungo's, ect, had at least a one portrait or more elsewhere in the castle and took turns keeping an eye on things, which I like to think is a big part of how Dumbledore always seems to know everything that is going on at the school.

They wouldn't need another portrait in the castle. They can move into any portrait in the same building they're in.
