I know. It's a very slow-going change. It's just a shame really, I'd like to be told I need to dress more like a girl less often.

Re: Females Smarter Than Males.

I'd just like to throw out there that there have always been gender roles. Always. Even the cavemen had gender roles. Obviously they haven't always been the same but every society in the history of ever has/had them.

They're never going to go away, unfortunately. It's not that it's slow changing, it's that it's never going to happen. There will always be ideas on what a woman is and what a man is because we're different. We as human beings cannot ignore the difference.

I agree that I don't think we should enforce gender roles strictly. I don't think a little boy should have to like cars and violence, stuff like that nor do I think that girls should have to like dresses and princesses, but it's not going to go away. Gender roles may change, but they won't go away.

If you're a girl that wants to be a boy or a boy that wants to be a girl, unfortunately you were born to an intelligent species that recognizes the difference between males and females and you will be judged. That's just how it is. Gender roles are just norms of society. Norms aren't these evil things that everyone thinks they are, they're just us humans trying to define what we as a culture think is normal and what we think normal behavior from certain groups of people are.

So the gender roles will change because they're always changing, but they're never going to go away.

The only one who can change a gender role is yourself.

OK, seriously that bugs me though. I don't get my panties in a bunch about grammar usually, but I just can't stand it when people use reflexive pronouns incorrectly.

Women will never be equal to men until they can walk down the street bald, with a big belly, and still think they are beautiful.

I agree with part of what you say. I guess we always will have gender roles, based on the actual physical and psychological differences between men and women. But as it is, these roles are exaggerated to no end. For example: men are a bit better at visuospatial working memory tasks than women, but differences within the population of men, and within the population of women, are much greater than differences between genders. Still, people keep convincing each other that women could not park a car if it could save their lives. And guess what? They do it every day without too much effort (I know I do).

Similarly, many men still seem to think that a woman is designed only to have children and breastfeed them, and that they are supposed to make a living. But think again: Dutch women typically breastfeed up to 6 months, not up to 4 years, like a few centuries back. Why do companies then still prefer men over women with the argument that a woman might decide to have children? It's not like she'll be attached to a child (if she decides to have children in the first place) for years and years, or at least: no more than the father. So it's a rather invalid argument, and still large companies make decisions based on gender roles that were once necessary for survival but now only imaginary.

And of course we may have some fun with being male or female. Sexuality, even in a very innocent form, gives us opportunities to socialise, relax and feel good about ourselves. We dance and flirt with the opposite sex (not the norm, but a most common example), dress to impress, use our strengths and each other's weaknesses in discussions, and tease each other with certain qualities, no matter how much we appreciate them in the people around us. I'm fine with that, and I don't think anyone is opposed to that. But don't think you should take it too seriously or that you should rely on these interactions.

I am a very androgyne person, in terms of personal interests and traits. I wear high heels and dresses, practice martial arts, plan to buy a motorcycle, use my female curves when dancing, make a career, fix my own car and spoil my friends' children. According to some people, I am only supposed to do about half of these things, and they will actively try to stop me from doing the other half. And even though I can hardly care about what some people think, if they act upon it, I will fight them until they cry. If I don't fit in to their neatly separated gender roles, that's their problem, and I'm not going to change "because society expects me to". That's not my reality, that's someone elses.

Norms and trying to fit a load of people into one hole is never going to work, and yet humans always seem to have this mindset that maybe it will this time.

I don't think that's necessarily true. Men and women both have their own unique strengths and weaknesses. They complement each other.

Not smarter... but generally there is a different way of thinking... generally speaking. It's a wide spectrum.

One could also argue that due to the rising feminist movement, women have been more eager to learn, thus advancing faster than men in schools...
