How couldn't Gellert Grindelwald escape?

Ok... maybe I'm just being stupid here, if so, no abuse please!

But...

When he needed to know the whereabouts of the elder wand, Voldemort (using magic) broke into Grindelwald's cell in Nurmengard prison.
So...if Voldemort could get into his cell, how come Grindelwald couldn't get out by using magic???

As I understand it, Grindelwald was a very powerful wizard, so surely he would have known???

Can someone clear this up for me?
Many thanks in advance.

Well, this is a film question, and we all know no logic applies to any story or character in the films, but... I think the answer is he had no wand to use to escape.

Thank's for the input.

Yeah, that does seem like a logical answer.

However, I may be wrong, but I believe that you don't actually a need a wand to apparate, so the question still remains.

I also agree that the films have missed out a lot of stuff which needed to be in there.

I assume that the Nurmengard Prison would've had anti-apparition jinxes on it so the prisoners couldn't simply apparate elsewhere.
