Why is it Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone? Wasn't it Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone?

The oringinal, UK version was Philosophers stone. For whatever reason the US version was renamed Sorcerer's Stone.

Yes, although both are kind of weird because no one is called a sorceror or a philosopher, they are called wizards, I think JKR just wanted it to sound more calssy, and America just thinks alliterations are cool.

well the philosophers stone is mythically real. It was the whole point of alchemy and there are some who believe Nicolas Flamel (he was a real guy) managed to make it. There have been several reported sitings of him after he was supposed to be dead. The US publishers just thought no kid would want to read a book with "philosopher" on it, and that sorcerer would appeal more.

In the UK version its called the Philosphers stone, in the US its Sorcerer, so technicially Philosphers Stone is the oringinal name.

I think it had something to do with children reading the words Philosopher's Stone and getting ideas about alchemy.........

i heard on a news program that the publishers decided to "dumb" the title down for the american version!

not sure if its true or not, but its pretty strange having different titles for different places. as far as im aware non of the other HP books had different titles did they?

I hate that they changed the title here in America. Now most people know it as the sorcerer's stone here when its not even the real title.

This questions beginning to get on my nerves, as so many people ask it.

You mean

"Why is it Harry Potter and the Sorcerors Stone? Wasn't it Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone?"

As it was origionally Philosophers. But I'm not sure why they changed it to Sorcerors for USA.

We Americans didn't choose to change the title, I honestly didn't know that it was called the Philosopher's Stone until recently. I also hate that they changed it though, because no matter how much anyone tells me the proper title, I'm still going to think of it ats the Sorcerer's Stone, which is incorrect Sad

yeah its something like what ala said. not quite though i can't remember where i saw this but it was because either 1. it wasnt a catchy name 2. it was because it had to do something about Philosopher being a bad influence or something...

ok this was years ago i saw this so dont blame me!

i think they changed the title for the us version because the english vernacular and the american vernacular are different. when i think of a philosipher i dont think of magic i think of logic and real world stuff. but when i think of a sorcerer i think magic. they basically changed it so people like me would get it at first glance, even though i would eventually figure it out. remember this was the first one, you dont want to confuse people, you want to sell as many books as possoble. thats all i can think of right now.
