the school and surrounding area seems to be swarming with dementors, so who is guarding azkaban? just a skeleton crew? that seems rather dangerous considering the large amount of bad wizards in the prison. _________________ how tough am i? well, i'll have you know i stubbed my toe last week (while watering my spice garden), and i only cried for 20 minutes!

I'm pretty sure that not all of the dementors were at Hogwarts. I assume that there are many dementots guarding Azkaban. _________________

harry saw hundreds of dementors coming towards him across the lake. i forget which book (i think half blood prince) harry says there are hundreds, maybe thousands since they've been breeding.
so, if he saw hundreds come across him, and all of those normally guard the prison, the amount left at the prison would've been greatly diminished. _________________ how tough am i? well, i'll have you know i stubbed my toe last week (while watering my spice garden), and i only cried for 20 minutes!

Not necessarily. For all we know, that could be just a small portion of the azkaban dementors. _________________

I don't imagine they'd actually have to have that many. just station one in a room and you're good. _________________

It's not unlike an army... Sure, the numbers might be less since they are now spread out, but as long as there are enough to complete each task, it should be fine. _________________

it's not quite the same because they are dealing with magic. the dementors are necessary to keep the prisoners depressed enough to make their magic not work.
i wonder if dementors are anywhere else besides azkaban. _________________ how tough am i? well, i'll have you know i stubbed my toe last week (while watering my spice garden), and i only cried for 20 minutes!

No -- that's the whole point in keeping them at Azkaban. The wizarding world wanted to keep the dementors concentrated in one place where they weren't harming people. The dementors thrive off of slowly sucking the happiness out of people, and the wizards needed to keep the Azkaban prisoners from having incentive to excape. So having the dementors guard azkaban was pretty much the trade off. _________________
