In the books there appears to be 5 students in each dormitory. So between the 4 houses there should be around 40 students in 5th year. So why in Snapes Worst Memory did over 100 parchments fly up to Flitwick at the end of Snapes and James Potters OWL Examination? There should have been only 40 not 100.

As JKR said, math and numbers are not her strong point. Also, I wondered if you would be able to take OWLs in 6th year, if you wanted to retake a class or changed your mind or something.
Plus, there could have been more students in the marauder's year.

Why would there have been more students?
(Oh and see i remember parts of OotP  )

Well, in general, there won't always be the exact same number of students every year. 100 to 40 seems pretty steep, thoough. Maybe this is due to many deaths during Voldemort's reign? The drastic change in numbers are possible, but I dunno. I'm leaning more towards JKR just not being a numbers person.

There were 155 students in my graduating class. This year there will be over three hundred from the same school. Each generation has a different amount of children and usually the state of living is the reason that there are more or less children. Look at the baby boom, for example. In the years prior to the boom, there weren't many babies being born. The reason for this is that WWII was happening. Goods were being rationed, many people were still living in poverty from the depression, and people were extremely busy doing their parts to make life better for soldiers fighting in Europe.
Directly after the war, people did what they had been putting off during the war, they had childred. They had a lot of children. Incidentally, Harry's parents just barely made the baby boom generation, which may be part of the reason for the large amount of students in their year. While I know that the war probably didn't affect the wizarding world much, the influx of babies born to muggles may have caused more muggle-born witches and wizards than is typical.
We also have to look at the time-period in which Harry was born. When Harry was born, life in the wizarding world was much like life for muggles during WWII. People lived in constant fear of the war going on outside arriving on their doorsteps. Many people were living in hiding, and inevitabley doing without the financial security that ther were one used to since they were probably not working. There was probably a drastic reduction in the amount of babies being born in the wizarding world during this time. This would cause smaller classes at Hogwarts during Harry's time. Of course, the size of the classes just a few years behind Harry would probably be larger since people celebrated the fall of Voldemort when Harry was just 15 months old.
