I've got to plug The Dresden Files on here. Definitely geared to a more mature age group than Harry Potter (though it is about a wizard named Harry Smile ) It's urban fantasy with a bit of mystery thrown in.

Oops, forgot to put the author. They're by Jim Butcher. He also writes a, high fantasy I guess, series - Codex Alera - but I haven't gotten around to reading those yet. (Anyone who watches the SciFi channel may remember the Dresden Files tv series - which got cancelled - damn you SciFi)

I agree with anyone who's said LotR, Artemis Fowl, Tamora Pierce, Redwall, and the Chronicles of Narnia.

I have to add:

The Keys to the Kingdom
The Old Kingdom Trilogy
(both by Garth Nix)

And the ever loved by me,

The Pit Dragon Trilogy by Jane Yolen

1) His dark Materials
2) Skammarens dotter (norwegian)

Ok, they aren't the best fantasy books of all time, but they deserve to be on the list somewhere...

1. Tamora Pierce's Tortall books.
2. I fairly recently read Holly Black's trilogy. Not sure what the trilogy name is, but the books were called Tithe, Valiant, and Ironside. I loved 'em.
3. Not a series, but Ella Enchanted. It's been one of my favorites for years. Short and easy to read, but so good.
