Lily had red hair and freckles. Ginny has red hair and freckles. This has Freud written all over it.

I have mentioned his oedipal complex quite a few tims one her . . . in jest. Most people have oedipal complexes. There really doesn't seem to be much to discuss. We all know that this is true for Harry.

A lot of people tend to fall for guys or girls who remind them of their parents in both good ways and bad. This is usually done subconciously, depending on if you believe in Freud's theory.

mmhhmm, it could just be a coincidence.
The only things they had in common was that they had red hair, same house and well liked (according to JKR).
Red hair, brave, and nice... nothing wrong with those traits.

HAHAHA, I was waiting for you to say something like that.

Of course you would be the better choice, no disputing that. But as far as girls go, Ginny is a hip chick. Hermione is super smart, a hard worker and uber brave. She'd be a good pick, too. Not surprsing that Viktor and Ron both fell over themselves for her. Molly was brave, too and we know she was prefect and all that. If Hermione had red hair, would we be analyzing them, too? This is silly, just because Ginny has red hair, lol.

I've never though about that before. It is a good theory but if I remember correctly Harry never liked her in the beginning. (Even though she was nice, in the same house and was a bit like Lilly.) If you ask me, it must be something else because Harry didn't start liking her until the 6th book.

Well, she didn't really show Harry her bravery until the fifth book. She was always so shy around him. And at that time he liked Cho, so Ginny wasn't really on his mind, other than being a friend and Ron's sister. It was during OotP that we see her be (beacuse Harry finally gets to see her be) brave, witty, and kind.
But everything started adding up for him and by the time school started in HBP, he was crushing on her. By the time the end of HBP approached, he had fallen in love with her.
He didn't start liking her until he got to know her, during OotP into HBP. Before that they never walked in the same social circle, but the DA and quidditch changed that. As he got to know her, he liked what he got to know. It's the opposite of Cho, who he didn't know at all before going with her to Hogsmeade.

I always figured it was written as kind of cute thing to have happen - Harry looks like his father and ends up with a girl who's like his mother.
I agree though, that it would be less surprising if he'd grown up with his mother. It is true that people often choose partners that resemble their parents, or themselves, since that's what they're most familiar with.

I was just saying that even before Harry got to know the real Ginny she still did resemble Harry's mum so could that disprove this theory ?

Well, the only things Harry knew about Ginny before OotP was that she was usually talkative, had a crush on him and she was sorted into Gryffindor. So either she valued bravery or valued being like her family before her. Either way, not terribly bad traits. As far as being anything like his mom, before OotP the only thing he knew for certain was that they both were in Gryffindor and had red hair.

I'm sure they talked at the Burrow and at school and stuff. But I think if it was significant, then JKR would have showed us, imo. I personally think that before GoF, Ginny might have been too shy to form proper sentences around him, so to speak. In PoA she sent him that singing get well card. I don't think it was until she met Michael at the Yule Ball that she started seeing dating life beyond Harry, and maybe that put her at more ease, somehow. As a girl who was once her age, I can empathize with her there. Embarassed

Good point. Although, When ever I look at my girlfriend and my mom I see no similarities. At all. So I thought that maybe there was something more to it.

Perhaps there are similarities you haven't noticed yet... like, things you didn't know about your mom or something. And if not... that's fine. Could be for the best, lol.

I believe for the best. I can't imagine being in bed and thinking how much she reminds me of my mom. it's just so...wrong.

Definitely. Gah. Personally, my bf reminds me of a my dad in only the fact that he refuses to clean his room, lol. But I think that's a basic guy trait. Razz jk jk

But yeah, when you think about it... Lily was nice and brave. And had red hair. Ginny was nice and brave. And red hair. What guy wouldn't want a girl who was nice and brave? The hair color shouldn't matter... For all we know Hermione's dad had red hair, lol. It doesn't matter.

I don't think that's to true. Ginny and Lilly were two different people and when I read the books I didn't see to much of Ginny in Lilly or vise versa.

I think there could be just as many similarities as there could be differences. I mean, sure they were both nice... but Hermione was nice, too. But Ginny played Quidditch and Lily didn't. They both had red hair... but Lily had green eyes and Ginny had brown.

It's a reach to say that just because Ginny has red hair he had a thing for his mom. I mean, my dad has brown hair and hazel eyes... so does my bf. And they both refuse to clean their rooms. I don't have daddy issues, I honestly didn't know what color my bf's eyes were when we started going out and I certainly didn't know what his room looked like, either.

Ron to is in the same house, and he also have red hair and freckles - but I doubt that Harry likes him better than other students because of that. Sounds a bit weird to me. (in fact everything does, I'm not that used to english. :p hope my english grades are getting better, with that much practising I'm getting here ^^)

Btw, what does "Oedipus Complex" and "Freud" mean? ;p

Frued, whose full name is Sigmund Freud, was considered the Father of Psychology. He worked to try to figure out how the human mind worked. One of his theories was the Oedipus Complex, named after the Sophocles play and Greek legend of Oedipus Rex, where he unknowingly killed his father and married his mother.
One of Frued's theories was that every child has a desire for their parent of the oppisote sex and a hatred for the parent of the same sex.
