I like Sisters of Mercy Smile

I like piercings, but I'm too much of a clumsy yutz to have many (I just caught my helix on my comb the other day)
I like corsets, but I'm too poor to buy any Laughing

I think I'd trip and fall in bondage pants Laughing Back to the clumsy yutz again. I do have some pants that I've added chains to myself.

I listen to a lot of rock and metal too - and classical, and jazz...I have a really eclectic taste in music.

ehhh? why? I think ppl should wear anything they want and like. Is it for someone else to decide what you should wear?? You should feel comfortable in your clothes and nothing else matters ^^

Goth is such an enormous category now that I feel apart of it, but I don't identify with it so much any more. If that makes any sense.

I love old 20-40's cabaret styled, silent movie, flapper-esque fashion along with what most Germans would call contemporary goth, if they used the word the same as we do. Hot Topic though, is nothing more than a joke to me.

As far as music goes, I love 80s obscure music and new cabaret bands like The Dresden Dolls.

... I'll also tolerate a bit of Manson and NIN ... but only in small doses!

Very cool.

I love 30s and 40s fashion and hair. (If I could get my hair to cooperate). And I like the torch music from that era.

The Black Parade is actually a stage production the band My Chemical Romance used as a gimmick for the release of their third record. They performed as The Black Parade for the promotional tours, but now only play as themselves. The lead singer's name, just in case you wanted to know, is Gerard Way ... and although he is a bit "gothy," I believe I read an interview with him once saying he detested the term. In any case, to be completely anal about it, MCR are more screamo cabaret than anything, which I suppose could be a sub-genre of the current "goth movement."

Panic! at the Disco is actually not considered to be "goth" ... I'm not exactly sure what they like to be called. All I know is they rip their lyrics from the molesation of Chuck Palahniuk books, yet put on a pretty interesting theatrical show. ... but theatrics do not equal "goth."

Sorry if that sounded a bit harsh ... I just couldn't help myself from replying.

To me, now that I've grown older and gotten out of my "my life is one, big, dark room" phase, the term goth represents more of a life-style and culture to me, rather than some dress code and list of bands.

I've always liked dark, macabre things. I've always preferred most things that were alteast 50 years before my time. I like dark, grim movies and fairy tales ... the list goes on, I'm sure you get the picture. It's just who I am.

And yes, goth parties are the best! A friend of mine used to throw them at her apartment once every two weeks ... complete with great lighting, amazing music, obscure food/drinks, and some of the most interesting people I have ever met! There were even smoke machines, living statues and once a guy who did nothing but recite Edgar Allen Poe poems straight from his memory all night in the kitchen.

Very memorable!

Hah, i was thinking the same, Panic at the Disco goes by pop-punk and indie.

AsteriaBlack mentions that he is MCR and he is Gerard Way a few posts back, and I already said they are pop-punk

I only meant that Gerard isn't gothy that he's Gerardy. That's the only part of the post that I meant no one had mentioned. ((Does that even make sense?))

Yep, I understood what you meant ... but I suppose it depends on how you read the sentence.

So aside from this talk of MCR anc P!ATD ... anyone else have something "gothy" to talk about? Any nice places you know of to shop for cool clothes ... any book reccomendations or bands you'd like to share?

i think to say your goth only reduces your intelligence in that you are reducing your whole self of being into a 4 letter word and stereotyping yourself into one broad category

Goodgoth and Arsenic Fashions have some cool clothes sometimes. Goodgoth is generally fairly affordable too (they occasionally stock some expensive stuff) and they have some nice variety. Arsenic has interesting accessories - I got a parasol from there awhile back. A lot of their clothing is expensive unless you check out the "under $20" sections.
Of course if you're crafty at all you can always scour the thrift shops and such for things you can modify. And I'm a fan of the value fabric shelf at Walmart.
