Interesting. Dobby must've heard Lucius Malfoy talking to someone about it? But who? Who else knows of the plot to plant the Diary and unleash Slytherin's pet? Draco?
MAYBE HE WAS MENTIONING IT TO HIS FAMILY, THEN DOBBY HEARD IT.

“Albus Dumbledore is the greatest headmaster Hogwarts has ever had. Dobby knows it, sir. Dobby has heard Dumbledore's powers rival those of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named at the height of his strength. But, sir”—Dobby's voice dropped to an urgent whisper—”there are powers Dumbledore doesn't... powers no decent wizard...”
For the second time in the series, someone has said that Dumbledore has incredible powers, but that he doesn't use it, because he's a decent wizard. You guys recall what Professor McG said in Book 1, right?
So what other powers does Dumbledore have, really? And you've got to wonder how he has become so powerful. We know how Riddle did it. But what about Dumbledore?
Also, why do Dobby and Prof. McG know that Dumbledore possesses these legendary powers? Has he used it before?
OOH! MAYBE DD HAS SUCH POWERS ALSO THAT HE WOULDN’T USE BECAUSE HE IS DECENT? WELL, MAYBE HE CAN DO AN AVADA, BUT SINCE HE IS DECENT, HE WOULDN’T. THAT EXPLAINS WHY HE DIDN’T TEACH HARRY THOSE, AND INSTEAD SHOWED HIM THE BACKGROUND OF VOLDIE IN BOOK6. I THINK THAT VOLDIE’S BACKGROUND WILL BE THE STEPS IN DEFEATING HIM. |

why would dobby know that?
if dobby knew it, he must have picked it up from his master.
if lucius knew it, he would have told voldemort.
if voldemort knew it, he wouldnt have bothered with gregorovitch and grindelwald, and would have immediately proceeded to dumbledore's grave.
i doubt that is the magic dobby is pertaining to.

This line... —”there are powers Dumbledore doesn't... powers no decent wizard...” makes me think Dobby is speaking of the Horcruxes. Lucius himself might not even know. Dobby could have overheard it from anyone.
It sounds more like Dobby is talking about powers DD doesn't know about or doesn't do himself, despite the fact that he is a great wizard. Like, as great as DD was, he never knew how to fly. For all we know, that could require Dark Magic. Afterall, the only ones to be able to do it are Voldy and Snape. One obviously taught the other and both were heavy into Dark Magics.
The comment McGonagall makes could have been talking about anything, even about DD being able to use wandless magic.

hmm... it could be, but i doubt that too. i dont know where dobby would have picked up the idea of horcruxes. if lucius himself didnt know... then i doubt dobby would.

how do you know that they didn't mean the fight between grindelwald and DD? Cuz, if dumbledore defeated grindelwald, everyone knew, then they would know that he has power.

^^ i was wondering about that myself. it is most likely his family, but still. it would be extremly risking telling anybody it, because it would put them in danger.
...however, lol. i have a reason why it might not be his family. becasue when harry and ron take the polyjuice potion, and interagate draco. he says that he's dad wouldnt tell him much, expect that the person caught last time was expelled. i think draco would of known more if he knew he's dad had planned it.
so yeah what does everybody else think?? lol

Lucius purposely didn't want Draco to know so he would stay out of trouble. Lucius didn't know who was opening the Chamber, only that the diary was precious to Voldemort. I would assume Dobby overheard Lucius talking to his wife, Narcissa.

I think Dobby was talking about the Battle with Grindlewald that is what he has heard. The other thing is that Mcgonnagal was talking about powers that no decent wizard would use aswell. They both could be just saying that dumbledore is powerful enough to USE dark magic but WOULDNT because he is set against the dark arts and wouldnt stoop that low.
