They might! Wouldn't it be so nice if Hermione found out her great great great grandmother was a witch?

I think that the general idea is that most muggle-borns do have wizarding ancestors, but they are way up the line. Somehow there is just a muggle who wins the gene lottery and happens to inherit that gene.

So what you are trying to say is that somewhere in Hermiones gene pool there might be a Squib?

That's exactly how it works. JKR said in an interview, that I will now try to locate and post here when I find it, that Hermione and muggleborns in general must have some wizarding blood in them...

EDIT: I found the article...

J.K. Rowling Bloomsbury Web Chat Transcript

Katie Mosher: How exactly do muggleborns receive magical ability

J.K. Rowling: Muggle-borns will have a witch or wizard somewhere on their family tree, in some cases many, many generations back. The gene re-surfaces in some unexpected places.

The whole interview is here.

I don't think that, that person would be far enough back in Hermione's family tree.

Since I just got done teaching a genetics lesson, I'd imagine you could have a situation where the wizarding gene is recessive in which case it could "lay dormant" until two carriers had a child who happened to inherit both recessives. So Hermione probably had a wizard relative somewhere on each side.

That's a cool thought, as you never know who the person way way back is.

I never really cared to much about it to go digging in to it but I just always figgured there was a wizard some where in the family. Do you think Hermione ever found out who the relitive was ? Her parents were happy when she had been accepted to hogwarts so maybe they knew the relative in the family ?

There was another idea that was brought up in Slytherin Rising that makes some sense, depending on the theology surrounding the afterlife in wizarding world. Re-incarnation. If a witch or wizard is born into a muggle family, then they have a good chance of becoming a muggle born.

That is assuming that reincarnation is even a thought to the wizarding world. JK avoids a lot of religious subtext in the books, so we don't know what the view on the matter of the afterlife are.

this confuses me. if all muggleborns would have wizarding ancestors way back, then doesn't that defeat the point of the whole plot of DH?
in the 7th book the whole story is that voldemort takes over the ministry and is trying to get rid of muggleborns because they have "stolen" their magic. and then they try to make them prove they have wizarding ancestory. but if all muggleborns had wizarding ancestory then the death eaters would have to arguement!!

The DE probably don't have an argument really. They're probably relying on the muggle-borns not being able find/prove their wizarding ancestry even if it is there.

Yeah . . . How many people have followed their ancestries through the centuries. These distant ancestors may have lived hundreds of year ago, and I think that they did for the majority of muggle-borns.

but if the muggleborns knew that they had some wizarding blood then they would have gone to alot of bother to prove it.

They didn't know where their wizarding blood was and couldn't prove it, though. That's the problem.

I think it's more about how far back the magical ancestor is. Many people don't know who their great-great grandparents are. If the magical ancestor is even further back, than how should the muggles know that? There is no proof, unless you have some lame documentation, which most people don't have.

Definitely. It's hard enough to find everyday things about distant ancestors, let alone something as off-the-wall as that. Not exactly the thing you can look up on ancestry.com Smile

yes you would have to
althought it would be hard to prove
many people believe that muggle borns stole thier powers
thus squibs
but it is bogus
lily was a muggle born
yet her parents were thrilled to find out that she was a witch
if they had not known someone in thier familys who had power that why were they so thrilled?
they would have learned about the magical world when lily got her letter
Unless snapes family said something?hum
