Well as far as we know he is dead and I don't think he could possibly be alive. I know that the Viel is a very mysterious object and we don't know much about it but, i think it's rather dangerous somehow and that's why it was there. I think that when Sirius got knocked back and went behind the Viel he died...plus why would JK say that she killed off a character and then say..."oh he's not dead"...doesn't make much sense on her part. Nope he's dead and I don't think he'll be returning.

Hey no one saw Sirius's dead body did they, he just fell through a viel. Maybe he has been transported to China or something, and he is still on his way back to England.

I dunno about China and all ... But I do agree with that it could be a portal. And I am about 100% sure that he isn't dead. It looks like ... I dunno, in the room where the veil is, it is like an auditorium. There are seats all around. They must watch something ... It isn't a portal to Azkaban is it? Seeing as there was whispering and stuff.

Okay, China is a bit way off.......maybe he married a Japanese woman and settled down (jokin).

Lets hope it was a portal, and that Sirius will soon come back.

Sirius is also the name of a star, it's also called the star of rebirth or
"the dogstar". It's the brigtest star in the group (?) "the great dog"

A long time ago, I opened a topic about this on a Dutch site. I'll try to translate what I wrote and then I'll edit this post...

Edit:
This is the translation, (please forgive me for making horrible faults, I'm only fifteen Smile) there were quotes from the books, but I'm not at home (University Smile) so I don't have the Dutch or the English versions.

Translation:
I was surfing around on the internet when I found an artikel about what we can expect in book 7. One of the things it said was:
The infamous question from the World Book Day chat read, "If we ever see Sirius again, what form will he be in?" Jo said, "I couldn't possibly answer that for fear of incriminating myself."
Why?
Telling us about a part of book 7?

Options for returning:
1) He becomes a ghost
2) He isn't dead
3) There's another Priori Incantatem (with Bellatrix)
4) As a sort-of-ghost, because of a Horcrux
5) The veil was a time-portal
6) A pensive
7) The two-way mirror

He becomes a ghost
There are a few reasons why someone becomes a ghost. He is afraid of death (Nearly Headless Nick) or he has unfinished buisness.
In Sirius' case it could be that he has to protect Harry (or at least thinks he has to). For example the letters he wrote to harry during the Triwizard Tournament.
Extra argument: Nick has given a detailed explenation about ghosts, but hasn't been used yet. (And JK doesn't introduce us to things, just for the fun of it)

He isn't dead
When Lupin tells Harry that Sirius isn't there, he doesn't use the word dead. He says: He is gone.
Also; Sirius was hit by a red spell. Avada Kedavra is green. What spell do we know that's red, Paralitis.
When hit by Avada Kedavra, the victim dies instanly. Sirius still had time to open his eyes in shock and (after some time) there was fear and suprise on his face. In Carlo's eyes there was no expression and he had a slightly suprised look on his face.

There's another Priori Incantatem (with Bellatrix)
The Proiri Incantatem has only been used once. Marcel get's a new wand after his old one got broken in the MoM. And again, JK re-uses things.
Extra with this one: Harry isn't going to finish Voldy through a game of quidditch nor is he or voldemort alone.

As a sort-of-ghost, because of a Horcrux
I don't think this to be very likely, but I'm just naming all the options. JK did say that Sirius' motor will return in book 7. (Same for mr. Weasleys car.)

The veil was a time-portal
Does anyone remember Stubby? Very Happy
And again timeturners? Just once?
The department of the MoM were Sirius get's killed is the department of time; that thing with the egg and the bird... a cabinet that keeps getting broken and reapairing itself. (Harry assumed it was full of timeturnes), the phropecy's (predicting the future), the brains (memories (past)).
Would a time portal in the middle of this area be so weird?

And there's Stubby Boardman, he's mentioned in an artikel in the Quibbler. Was that just to entertain hp-readers?
Well, they have the same initials, and Luna says this when Harry tries to convince Hermione that they need to go to the Mom:
"Though clearly trying to understand what was going on, Ginny said immediately 'Yeah, we'll do it,' and Luna said, 'When you say "Sirius," are you talking about Stubby Boardman?'"

And Kingsley Shacklebolt sent a copy of that artikel to Sirius (he gave it to Arthur on the day of Harry's trial). Maybe that's where Sirius got the idea.

A pensive
He wouldn't be able to talk, but the memorie might have information about horcruxes. (Maybe a conversation with Dumbledore or Regulus)

The two-way mirror
This has only been used once, again: not just mentioned for fun.

Here are my thoughts:

1. Sirius fell through a freagin' veil, and not off of the Grand Canyon.
2. The spell used to hit him was NOT an unforgivable curse.
3. Harry needs Sirius (as do I).
4. Why would Jo give Harry security through Black if she were to just
rip it away?
5. I like the number 5.
6. Nobody, including Sirius's best mate Lupin, has mourned for him.
7. Harry has the two-way mirror that he is yet to use-
More than likely something will happen when he uses it.

...and finally,
8. How will I marry him if he doesn't come back? Very Happy

Exactly!
Plus, I don't think that Sirius will come back as a ghost because of what Nearly Headless Nick told Harry.

He already tried to use it, you twit. Tessa's right. You need to reread the book.

I know that he has tried, I'm only pointing out that it hasn't worked as of now. Tessa wasn't stating that I should re-read the book, only that the mirror was smashed, and that they did, in fact, learn a certain spell.
Perhaps, you should re-read the posts - twit.

I think that the curtain is probably a portal to another dimension. Either that or it leads to a secret room and Sirius is kind of trapped inside. I think if it lead to anywhere on this world (even if it was Azkaban), Sirius would at least try to write to Harry.

Well, I think that the veil will have something to do with te plot of book 7; I mean, JK doesn't introduce things in the books because it's fun...

And everyone is concentrating on the death of Sirius when they read that part... not on the veil.

(Luna could help Harry with it in some way, she heard the voices too)

i don't think he is dead.
i think he is kind of like stuck in limbo somewhere.
and i really think he will either come back or harry will find some way to communicate with him.
he is too important to die.
and jkr confirmed dumbledore was def dead and not coming back, but she didn't say the same about sirius.
i love sirius, i don't want him to be dead. Crying

The following quote is from an interview with JK Rowling around the time the fifth book comes out, and obiously it is on the OOtP:

Quote:
JEREMY PAXMAN: And is there going to be a death in this book?

JK ROWLING: Yes. A horrible, horrible

JEREMY PAXMAN: A horrible death of a significant figure.

JK ROWLING: Yeah. I went into the kitchen having done it....

JEREMY PAXMAN: What, killed this person?

JK ROWLING: Yeah. Well I had re-written the death, re-written it and that was it. It was definitive. And the person was definitely dead. And I walked into the kitchen crying and Neil said to me, "What on earth is wrong?" and I said, "Well, I've just killed the person". Neil doesn't know who the person is. But I said, "I've just killed the person. And he said, "Well, don't do it then." I thought, a doctor you know....and I said "Well it just doesn't work like that. You are writing children's books, you need to be a ruthless killer."

JEREMY PAXMAN: Is it going to upset people?

JK ROWLING: Yes. It upset me. I always knew it was coming, but I managed to live in denial, and carry on with the character and not think about it.

Notice she never said it was Sirius. If you think about it, getting strangled by Devil's Snare si a lot more horrible than falling through a curtain, isn't it? Well, yes, I'm a bit in denial too. But this is what JK Rowling said.
