The long-requested sequel to Henry Potty and the Pet Rock has arrived!
The book is Henry Potty and the Deathly Paper Shortage by Valerie Estelle Frankel (978-1-59594-241-8, WingSpan Press, $12.95), a parody of Harry Potter book seven (though there’s no 2-6 in the Henry Potty series). As the author says: “Some might think that after book one would come book two, and then three, and so on in some logical fashion. Those people lack imagination. This author, on the other hand, has a chorus of singing potatoes to guide her.” These potatoes, however, take a backseat to the flying pigs flapping across her website and occasionally her head at her conference appearances. Ms. Frankel spoke at Portus 2008 and appears next at the World Science Fiction and Fantasy Conference August 6-10. Her flying pigs (or at least the one she wore at Portus) will be accompanying her.
As Sabrina Williams from Front Street Reviews states: “Frankel appears to have gained confidence with this new release, and the book flows smoothly. The plot is more intricate than that of Pet Rock, and incorporates aspects of many of the Harry Potter novels, along with other well-known stories. Henry Potty is pure fun with tons of laugh-out-loud scenes. Harry Potter fans will enjoy the light-hearted take on a beloved hero.” Indeed, the new Henry Potty bulges with gratuitous references and pokes at every other fantasy book the author could come up with, from Narnia to Eragon to Lord of the Rings. At 180 pages, it offers crazy pop culture references, slapstick comedy, and gut-bustingly funny heroic statements as it sends up the hottest young adult literature.
The plot of this novel echoes Deathly Hallows with a silly twist: The devious Lord Revolting has split his soul into seven Plot Devices, from the One Ring to the Really Gross Wooden Eyeball. Can Henry Potty, lousy student and heroic Chosen One, destroy them in time? Or will a paper shortage kill him, as the corporeally challenged Bumbling Bore foresees? Join Henry as he duels mimes, droids, blobs, religious extremists, parapsychologists, and the dreaded Tooth Fairy. Which is the deadlier weapon: the Wand of Napalm or the Mega Death Laser 3000? It’s a race against National Treasures, Legions of Dimness, and Miniclorians, from the Funhouse of Terror to the Locker Room of Doom. But if Henry wants to recoup his fans from Professor Sniffly Snort, he must try…
It’s suitable for all ages, though book seven, like its original, is more of a teen book rather than a kids’ book. At this moment, Deathly Paper Shortage is arriving on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Ebay, local bookstores, and more. Several chapters are available free off Ms. Frankel’s site, www.HarryPotterParody.com.
Henry Potty and the Pet Rock is sold in similar locations. Winner of the Phelan Award for Humor, National Indie Excellence Award 2008, and USA Book News National Best Book 2007, the book has been featured in hundreds of news sources including US News and World Report, radio shows, and international Harry Potter sites from Turkey to Sweden.
This month, Ms. Frankel is hosting a giveaway for a signed, numbered limited edition copy of Henry Potty and the Deathly Paper Shortage. Enter through August 11th at www.HarryPotterParody.com. _________________ Valerie Estelle Frankel
