we'll i guess you're right...sorcerer's sounds magical..maybe they want to sound as genius so they change it into Philosopher's stone

Philosopher's stone was the original that JKR wrote she calls it that... in England its the Philosopher's stone.... but typical America wanted to make it sound more magical and changed it to sorcerer's sounds.... i still always call it Philosopher's stone...
i guess thats just me being British but JKR calls it that... and so do i

JKR said that she agreed to the change because she was so shocked anyone wanted to publish her work... she said she would have agreed to anything. But she has said since then that she won't lett hem change the title again... unless, of course, they have to for translation purposes.

well... sorcerer's stone for me sounds more captivating... at least for kids. if the market was the children, then it would have to sound something like sorcerer, rather than philosopher. but it would be better for the adult version to be philosopher's stone.

Actually I dont see why the changed the name over hear in the U.S. The stone is a legend, not a well known legend but it is a legend that accured when we were trying to turn lead into gold... er alchemy right. But anyways they should have kept because it is a lgend and some people might have known about it over here and enjoyed a little bit of historical legend... w/e u want to call it.

you mean alliteration. onomatopoeia (yay spell check in my browser!) is when you make a sound into a word based on the sound...like moo.
I like philosopher's stone better, because like someone said...it relates to a real legend. I also don't like how they changed brit to american slang. how are we supposed to get the whole british-feel if they cut it out? whenever I go back to read the first 2 or 3 books I jump every time I see "mom' instead of "mum"
also...neville messed up in saying what the stone was in OotP at the Hog's Head....he said "sorcerous stone". What does it say in the british copies? "philosophorous stone"?

The British version is Philosopher's Stone, and for some peculiar reason they changed it to Sorcerors stone just for the USA, I think. I don't see the point of this. JK Rowling wrote it as Philosophers Stone, so I think i shold be this in every country.

Philosopher's Stone was already the title of another book, so to keep from being confusing Scholastic changed the title.
The stone itself is the Philosopher's stone (which kind of makes it harder to understand when the US version calls it something different.) But the US publishers thought that it would be easier for American audiences to use an "American version" of the book.

There's no differences. She just changed the title name.
Oh yeah and any mention of "Philosopher" in the British version would've been changed to "Sorceror'
Or any word that is different in America than Britain would've also been changed.

Certain phrases that Scholastic believed that American readers wouldn't understand (because they were british) were also changed (Thank goodness this was dropped after book 4)
But the #1 thing JKR refused to let them change was "Mum" to "Mom" she said that Mrs. Weasley wasn't Ron's Mom, she was his Mum!

People still to this day, attempt it (even though there's no way in heck it's possible to do.)
But you can read about the stone in mythology as well...i just forget which particular kind (Greek, or Roman)

I think that they changed it for the americans because we may have a slightly different definition of Philosopher than they do.
Sorceror may have been a sort of translation between dilects.
If you say you like sorceror better, its probably just because you're used to it.  |
