High School Musical 'sets record'

Page last updated at 11:37 GMT, Friday, 3 October 2008 12:37 UK

Cinemas around the UK have taken record advance bookings for Disney film High School Musical 3.

Three weeks ahead of its release, tickets to the value of more than £500,000 have been booked in advance, according to Walt Disney Pictures.

Odeon, the UK's largest cinema chain, said it had sold £245,205 in advance tickets, beating the record set by Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire.

The UK premiere for High School Musical 3 takes place on Tuesday.

Worldwide hit

Stars of the franchise, including Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens, are set to attend the London gala.

Rupert Gavin, chief executive of the Odeon cinema chain, called it a "phenomenal and record-breaking start" for the movie's UK run.

"Our cinemas have been inundated with calls to pre-book tickets for what could be the year's biggest kids and teen audience movie.

"With schools breaking up for half-term just as High School Musical 3 opens, we are bracing ourselves for a huge first week run," he added.

Odeon's advance ticket sales eclipsed the record set by the fourth Harry Potter film in 2005, which had taken £227,000 at the same stage of booking.

High School Musical 3, which is the first cinematic outing in the series, is due to open across the UK on 22 October.

The original TV movie took the US by storm when it appeared on the Disney channel in January 2006. It went on to become a worldwide hit.

The sequel shattered cable TV records last summer, with a premiere watched by 18.6m in the US.

Work has already begun on High School Musical 4.

*rolls eyes*

half the people who watch high school musical only watch it because they think it's stupid.
honestly people at school go on about how much they love it but you can tell they're trying to be funny. grr it's not funny though. i hate when things get popular like that.
at least harry potter fans are actually fans.

This is outrageous. I thought Vanessa Hudgens was going to quite doing the movies, but no, not even Zac Efron did it.

In my opinion, these movie has the gayest songs and Harry Potter will get its vengence when Half-Blood-Prince comes out!

Damn, that's a shame. I don't even like the Harry Potter movies, but to have one of its records broken by High School Musical. That's just sad.

That's exactly what they want to happen! This (no word to describe just how unintelligent people can be when it comes to this moron-induced Disney movie) movie was set out to make HBP look fantastically amazing. I give WB props for that.

By the way, DOWN WITH HSM!!!!!!!!! Evil or Very Mad

But it has a bunch of overly-developed, hot, teenaged girls with squeaky voices and a faux innocent personality and a guy who, if living in the "real-world", would not surivive.

Give em some credit. Laughing

Ew ew ew, it gets worse! There are rumours that he might be next in Equus. Of course, there is nothing to back it up and the run of the play is supposed to end the same time Daniel Radcliffe starts back to England...
Anyway, teh rumour comes from some random comment Zac Efron made on the red carpet and was reported by the UK Sun...

Quote:

COVER your ears as screaming girls prepare to rip their vocal chords to shreds over ZAC EFRON - who is preparing to bare his birthday suit onstage.
The Disney heartthrob has been approached to take over from Harry Potter actor DANIEL RADCLIFFE in controversial Broadway play Equus.

Zac let slip at the London premiere of High School Musical 3, saying: "You know that Daniel Radcliffe role on Broadway, well it's been mentioned.”

If it makes anyone feel better, Harry Potter's record still stands.

GoF was released in 2005 and since then the average price of tickets has gone up. So if you take the average rate of inflation over the three year period between 2005 and 2008 which was 4% then GoF advance ticket sales would actually be worth 254,000 pounds. 10,000 pounds more than High School Musical 3.

Ughh gosh.

They may as well give me my own waxwork if Zac Efron has one.

My friends want to go and see HSM3.
