well in the book it said Cho was coming ever closer (not an exact quote) and Harry tells Ron & Hermione that he patted her on the back (again not an exact quote) so they wouldn't have stood two feet apart with the only contact being thier lips

True that. I think they hugged as well. But to answer the original question, Harry must have been thinking things like these.
"Don't crash on her nose, don't crash on her nose..."
"Do I keep my mouth open or not?"
"Does my breath smell?"
"Do I move my arms when I hug her?"
"Do I use tongue?"
First kisses are always thought to be passionate and all, but they really are a bit un-cool most of the time.  Probably why it looked awkward.
I hope the Hbp kiss will not be awkward at all.

It was really long, dead silence and very .. well.. stiff. They were just standing there. I noticed it when watching in the cinema. I was with my mum the first time I went to see it (she likes HP too) and I was just sitting there, slightly embarrassed.

Yeah i thought it was odd but i dont blame them for being soo nervous which would make the moment awkward...it was his first and definitly not his last  it was cute...
