harry was doin magic in the start of the movie while he was doing his homework... this was wrong as he wasnt supposed to do magic AT ALL while out of school as he was an under age wizard.... funny how the film makers forgot this important rule

Nope, not in the book. In the book he's using a flashlight.

Oh geez, I never thought about that.
Another reason to be annoyed by the movies. Very Happy

I know this is a PoA thread, but I've been watching CoS this weekend (I love Harry Potter weekend!) And Hermione also does underage magic... right in the middle of Diagon Alley. Occulus Reparo. In the book it was Athur that performed the spell. There is no good reason as to why they had Hermione do it except that it mirrors their meeting in SS/PS movie. But it's a huge inconsistancy with underage magic. Especially since in the next film he is afraid of getting in trouble for using underage magic.

well there are so many witches and wizards in diagon ally that the ministry wouldn't pick up on it if a student did magic there.

yeah, true, i guess the rule is as long as you live in a muggle enviroment? plus, while he is there, fudge will write off anything just cuz sirius is after him (or so they think)

yeah about hermoine using magic.... she follows rules. tht was totally out of character for her to use magic out of school. and also it was not like tht in the book....

well, i think its ok, just as long as its not ridiculously far fetched. in making a movie, you also have to please those who do not read the books but merely watch them. harry using a flashlight is so muggle-like that it will be a boring start. the start always has to be nice.

Inaccuracies like those two mentioned are reasons I hate the movies as compared to the books. I've still seen all the movies though, lol. And saw the 5th one today and was upset in how inaccurate it was and how much was cut from the book.

wow, i never noticed that.
yeah, it's really weird how they act like it's such a big deal when he casts patronus when he really, really needs it, and he almost gets expelled.. then, when he does a lumos spell when he could use a flashlight (like i believe it was said in the book), no one cares at all. i mean, he was raised as a muggle for about 11 years of his life.

I understand that they want to make it more dramatic for the movies, but all it does is create confusion. I am the only one of my friends who has read the books and I am constantly answering these kinds of questions. So inconsistancies do make a big difference.

Yeah and then he got paranoid that he was gonna be expelled after blowing up Marge. He didn't worry about that magic did before that did he?? - At least that is how anyone who hadn't read the book and just gone to see the film would think.

Darn filmmakers!!!!

What bugs me is that... didn't ANYONE on the set think, "Gee, this is a huge inconsistancy. Maybe there is another way to start this movie. It would be dumb to start the movie with a gaping plothole." But no. Not one person seemed to either notice or care. And here we are, obsessing over this. It's so unfair.

Yea for sure.
I hate it when move makes always forget little things, but those little things mess up the whole concept

I was gonna create a topic about this, but leave it to my fellow fans to post it already :3

Maybe, in the Harry Potter Movieverse, Lumos is such a tiny spell it's almost like an added feature, such as you being able to write your name in the sand with your wand.

WHO KNOWS THOUGH

Yeah, my little sister pointed out the mistake in the beginning, and I was planning on making a thread about it. Agh, I hate these dumb mistakes.
