We thought the locket didn't mean anything...
Seriously with JK Rowling, any sort of twist is possible.

While I doubt it was Mad-Eye, the death certainly was left open thus so are my ears to any sort of theories.

here is what i think happened.

the curse hit his broom, as he fell, he dissaparated, but splinched himself because he was paniking and he left his eye behind.

JKR pretty much handed Moody's death to you on a silver platter.
I'm not sure what else there is left to question... unless you think Bill and Fleur were lying.

I have to say, I'm pretty Mad-Eye is dead. There are witnesses, and if the curse hit him in the face, I don't think he could have faked it. The idea that the curse was disguised is an interesting theory, but I don't think there's any foundation to it. Is it even possible to say one spell but think another one? I mean, I know the force of will is behind silent spells, but I don't think someone could actually do that. Have you ever tried to think one thing and say another in a nervous or anxious situation? It doesn't really work. You usually end up making no sense or saying what you're thinking. I'd say trying to find and kill the real Harry Potter counts as a nervous or anxious situation.

Sorry, but Mad-Eye is dead.

Sadly May-eye is dead, nothing to be done about it.

I guessed he choose to die for something rather than live for nothing.

mad-eye Is dead... there is no way of surviving the fall..

and he had the killing curse shot straight at his face... we only know 1 person 2 have survived avada kedavra.. and thts harry

simply becuz sum1 died of love for him.. i don't think mundungus would do tht favor...
