I was thinking about how everyone was cleaning the HQ of the order of the phoenix and they found a writing desk with a boggart in it and molly wanted Moody to take a look at it before they delt with it. Now when he checked it out what did he see? Because i thought that nobody had ever seen what a boggart actually looks like (as we learned in harry's third year). Well the boggart only takes shape of someones worst fear when that person meets the boggart face to face...but Moody didnt meet it face to face he looked at it and i dont think that the boggart knew it was being looked at so i was just wondering about that...

I think a boggart always appears to be your worst fear, even if it isnt looking at you directly. Moody obviously saw his fear, which leads us to believe there was a boggart in there.

i dont think so...i think a boggart has to confront a person before it turns into its worst fear otherwise in the third book when the class was facing the boggart they would all see it as their own personal fear, but they didnt they saw it as other peoples fears which leads me to believe that the boggart needed to be faced with a person to turn into something else.

Maybe it only shows the fear of the closest person to the boggart. crazy, but maybe/

hah... lupin SAID that nobody knows what a boggart looks like. but he just said that, because nobody walks around with magical eyes except moody. the boggart doesnt know that moody is looking at him, so it is not assuming any form. when he comes out of the closet and sees moody looking at him, it will turn into what moody fears. but whilst inside the closet, it looks like what a boggart looks like when it is alone.

Great observation! I hadn't thought of that before...

Perhaps an ambiguous dark image? There aren’t many, if any, people out there like Moody, who would be able to see a boggart without actually confronting it. I got the feeling that Moody had seen a one before, because he was able to tell Molly straight away that is what was in the desk.

I almost imagine a boggart as a shapeless mist when it is alone. I assume that moody had seen one before and was able to tell what it was. And yes a boggart only assumes the shape of a fear when it is face to face with someone.
