Because of many things really I would say.Most wizards especially from the ministry think they are superior to other magical beings.Ex:house elfs,centaurs(remember how she called them didty half-breed!)giant/half giants,goblins,or even muggle-borns.Remember the fountain how the goblin,elf,centaur were all looking up at the wizard in awe and admiration which indicates she was brainwashed as I call it by the wizarding community .She also had(or I think)the pureblood point of few when she wasn't one herself Dumbldore said so that along her line not to far back there were muggles.And in the the 7 book how she wore slytherins locket and claimed that the 'S' stood for 'sewlyn' when I don't think in all the Harry Potter books we had ever heard of a pureblood line 'sewlyn',but there could be.Also she was the one who started that muggle registration,and held the trials for muggle-borns who were all going to go to azkaban(we all know it).She was in slytherin,she had pure-blood views.So I would say she was swept up in that when she was young like all young slytherins and pureblood aristocrats.(Excluding the weasleys,of course)

i dont think of umbridge as evil, she was misunderstood.

you see.. as a wee lass she was taught about purebloods and muggles and how it was wrong to mix blood. but no one ever told lil dolores that her great great grandmum was a muggleborn. the great wizard florecetta umbridge, who helped the ministry form the chamber of untold background stories.

so it is unfortunate that umbridge was subjected to such racially charged thoughts when her relative fought for the rights for each literary character to have a story, no matter how small their part was in the untold story.

what j.k. didnt disclose until her "dumbledore is gay" shocker was that when umbridge escaped the centaurs she reformed. she decided to help n00bs err i mean muggleborn wizards get the respect that they deserve in the wizarding community. and she too became a great witch, who will be spoken about in wizard history classes.

*wipes tear from eye*

so think first, young n00b, before jumping to such conclusions as umbridge is evil.

I think she was in Slytherin household, she has no qualities of the other 3 houses. Blame it on her Slytherin friends, and let most of the blame fall on Slughorn. She always wanted to go to his parties, the Slug Club ones, but was never quite good enough. So she became power hungry to try and get in, but alas, was still rejected.

I always suspected her as a follower.

*shrugs and grins.*

Just kidding, though, I do actually believe she is.

but, I have no idea why Umbridge is the way she is. Probably because she strives for power, and she thinks the only way to get it is by being evil.

:O, plus she hates muggleborns and half breeds. If that's not proof of being a Voldie follower , I don't know what is. I'm just kidding.

I'm sure it has a lot to do with the way she was raised, but I dont think shes really evil per se she just wants everything to be in order and done EXACTLY by the book no matter how old and outdated some of it may be
