I've been wondering this ever since I read the first book and saw the first movie. You know the boys dormitory... how it only has five beds for Harry, Ron, Neville, Dean and Seamus? Is it just their room for that year of students? Because where do the other people sleep? The second years, third years, fourth years, etc. I've always been confused by this.

It never made sense, I think that there are these small floors for each year in the Gryffindor Boy Dormitory tower, and the first years have one of there own or something like that.

Its all confusing, I totally didn't notice that...

There are only five boys in Harry's year in Gryffindor.

Each year has their own room.

The rooms remain the same. So when the Seventh Years graduate, their room beomes the next year's First Year's room.

If you remember, Percy says there are dormitories up and down the stairs. Their dorm happens to be up. In the movies they are the only upstairs dorm but who knows how many dorms are up and how many are down in the books.

That's always confused me. What happens if like, there are more than 5 kids in that house for that year? What happens if like 10 kids join that house, which isn't too far fetched? Then where do they sleep Shocked

It's magic. They could just adjust size for more people.

... We have no idea how big or small the rooms really are. We know the students are able hear each other snore and throw things from one bed to another. When Harry was going through his trunk, he tossed the box of cauldron cakes into Ron's pile of presents b y accident. Assuming Harry doesn't throw it that hard, his trunk couldn't have been too far from Ron's bed.
Hermione is also able to sit on one bed, while comfortably talking to someone on another bed.

"I mean no even all first could hold in there"

erm... what? Confused

It's never really shown on the movies how the dorms are set up so I'm thinking that there are seperate rooms on the same floor for each years' students. Come to think of it, the girls' dorms are never shown either, are they?

We never get to see the girls dorms in the books or the movies. Well, Ron and Harry wanted to go up to the girls dorms in HBP to find Hermione, but the stairs turned into a slide, remember?
I guess because we see the books through Harry's eyes... and he never sees the girls dorms, neither do we....

Theres probally some charm to expand the room to make it fit more like the Weasley's Ford Anglia

I always thought they moved up through the dorms. I don't know how to explain that. But then again, there's a plot-hole in that as well.

It is on either the ps2 game on dvd extras (Can't remember... You'd think I would, seeing as the ps2 one is cartoon-ish...) that when you look up, you can actually see another circular floor above it, with beds. Harry's one is the ground floor out of them...

Or it could be a charm so that each dorm room just appears to the people who want to get into it... Kinda like the Room of Requirement. Lol I invented that option...
