Dumbledore asked Snape to kill him (Harry sees in Snape's thoughts) because Dumbledore was dying anyways of the potion he drank in the cave where he was hoping to find the horcrux. BUT! HE was in possession of the Elder Wand, which meant that if he died of the potion, then whoever took the wand would be the owner. He was afraid that would be Voldemort, so he made a plot that Snape kills him so that Voldemort doesn't be the rightful owner of the Elder Wand. He saw forward that Voldemort knew something that Snape didn't - That Snape was the owner of the Elder Wand. So Voldemort killed Snape. Then Voldemort thought he was the owner of the Wand, but he was wrong! The unbreakable Vow took into place when Snape killed Dumbledore. For it was Draco's duty to do it, Snape did it in his place. So when Snape killed Dumbledore, the Elder Wand belonged to Draco. So when Voldemort killed Snape, he did nothing.

Who made the potion in the first place? Wouldn't he be the true master.

Well, you could really think that if you didn't read the seventh book... it's a nice theory.

Before I read book 7 I was convinced he was still alive too, because of his association with the "phoenix".

The phoenix always rises from the ash. I thought the same would be true of Dumbledore. I always liked to think that Dumbledore had a greater plan then what was obvious to everyone else.

Then in book 7, when Harry kept seeing Dumbledore in the mirror (instead of his own reflection), it made me temporarily believe that Dumbledore was somehow "living inside of Harry", and that he was the one who controlled Harry's wand when he fought off Voldemort at the very beginning of the book.

In general though, the 7th book made us see that Dumbledore wasn't always "one step ahead"...in fact he was much less than perfect. I always thought he was a brilliant wizard who could solve any problem, but his imperfections that we saw in book 7 made him seem more real...the man behind the wizard. He was still brilliant - but not perfect. It made me like him less. And it made me like him more.

He's dead, but as he himself said, the ones we love who die never truly leave us.
