In Prisoner of Azkaban there are two scenes in which a bluebird makes wanton flights, attempting to roost in the Whomping Willow. Each time it's swatted away or killed by the willow. Why?

It's just so quixotic.

That was added into the movies as a way to keep the scene changes flowing.

Yah, that's what I thought they did it for as there was no purpose to it.

I think it was also a way to remind those who (for some odd reason) hadn't read the books -- about the willow, in case they didn't remember it from the previous film.

btw, shouldn't this be in the movie section?

It could really fit in both because she brang up the difference between the book and the movie.

And about the willow moving I guess it would help the non-readers even though when Harry and Ron crash into it, it starts to move. They'd probably relieze that it's the same tree. As for readers they'd already know the purpose of the Whomping Willow.

When the bird first takes flight, I think they were trying to show the changes to the set.

Yes, there was a clip of the Whomping willow with each season. It was how the director showed the passing of time.
