There're some examples of bad fathring in the books.

I'd pick Uncle Vernon as the worst for the way he spoils his son...

Tom Riddle senior...he abandoned his son completely. At least the others are/were there.

vernon may not have raised dudley properly, but at least we know that he loves him.

barty jr may have been to strict and too impersonal, but he was actually proud that his son got twelve OWLS, and he still let barty jr live in his house, and did not kill him for casting the dark mark.

lucius, well, a bad example, but he loves his son.

im surprised you didnt put Tobias Snape. its a tie between him and tom sr.

gosh i wouldnt even consider lucius and vernon worse than barty or tom.... and i think tom was ten times more horrible than barty. id put tobias beside tom. and if he is a wife and child beater, then id rate him worse than tom.

Hey now, not being very fair to poor Tom Riddle senior here fellas. It wasn't even his fault really. We'd of done the same thing; he never loved Merope she just used a love potion. He didn't just randomly wake up one day and decide he didn't like Merope anymore, because he NEVER liked her. He wasn't in the right mind.

but he could be responsible enough to take care of his son... its not like he didnt have the money anyway. and at least he could have bothered finding out what became of her and his own son...

The only fault I find with him is not finding what became of his son. But really he was a muggle, he probrably thought he had gone loco for a while and when he returned his friends would think that he had been temporarily mad. He had a girlfriend he didn't intend to have and he had a son he didn't intend to make.

Barty Crouch Sr. He was horrible to his son. He cared more about his job than Barty Jr.

i voted for crouch, just because riddle was a muggle. if he would have been a wizard himself, i wouldve voted for him tho.

yes tom sr didnt want to have that child. nevertheless, since he had the means to support him anyway, why didnt he just at least bother finding out waht happened to tom jr and his mother. whatever it is, tom jr is still his son.

Okay lets visualize for a second. A scary looking lady offers me a glass of lemonade. She looks so eager and hopeful that I accept grudgingly, not wanting to hurt her feelings. Merope suddenly looks like she's a top swimsuit model and I fall madly in love. For oh lets just say 3 months, this continues and overcome by love I abandon my hometown for Merope and we travel away together.
She gets pregnant and cannot bear to keep giving me the love potion perhaps, she thinks, I am in love with her by now anyway, or I at least won't leave for the babie's sake. I wake up one morning and there is this barbaric woman sleeping next to me. I high-tail it out of there and run back to my hometown. A year passes I am rather frightened by my previous actions and it doesn't help that my parents, neighbors, etc talk behind my back saying "he ran off with that crazy woman living on the hill." They (neighbors, relatives) of course tell me what an awful mistake I made and it takes another year before things seem back to normal.
In the back of my mind (seems more like a dream) I think I have a son, but then I push the thought away telling myself it wasn't real or perhaps it never happened, scared of what I had done.

Lets find fault with me go on don't be shy. My neighbors of course don't know I have a son for I wanted to keep things as quiet as possible. If I were to go back and spend close to a month (with muggle travel and not knowing where Merope went) searching for a son, which I kept telling myself wasn't real, my family would say what a disgrace I was and my neighbors would of course have all the more to gossip about.

i voted for malfoy.. mostly because his decision to continue to follow voldemort landed him in azkaban and put his own son in direct contact w/ death eaters and in SERIOUS danger. and it caused draco to step in and make a decision that is far beyond his years.. when a REAL dad would be there to help guide his confused teen away from danger and evil doing.. Malfoy's decisions FORCED draco to become a death eater.

It wasn't that Tom Sr. didn't ask to be a father... It's that he didn't ask to even be involved in the process of making the baby. Did Tom Sr know Merope was dead? Did she seek him out for help? Even if Tom Sr. wanted to help, would he have been able to locate her or the baby. We don't know what was going through Tom's mind, but he didn't deserve to be killed.
