Totino's, Jeno's Frozen Pizzas Recalled for Possible E. Coli Contamination
Thursday, November 01, 2007

MINNEAPOLIS — General Mills says it is recalling some frozen pizzas sold under the Totino's and Jeno's label because of possible E. coli contamination.

The company says the problem may stem from pepperoni produced at an Ohio plant. General Mills says state and federal authorities have been investigating 21 E. coli illnesses in 10 states.

Nine of those 21 people reported eating Totino's or Jeno's pizza with pepperoni topping at some point before becoming ill.

Symptoms of E. coli can include stomach cramps and diarrhea. People typically are ill for two to five days but can develop complications including kidney failure.

1 Million Pounds of Ground Beef Recalled Over E. Coli Fears
Saturday, November 03, 2007

WASHINGTON — The giant agribusiness company Cargill Inc. said Saturday it is recalling more than 1 million pounds of ground beef that may be contaminated with E. coli bacteria.

The ground beef was produced between Oct. 8 and Oct. 11 at Cargill Meat Solutions' plant in Wyalusing, Pa. and distributed to retailers across the country. They include Giant, Shop Rite, Stop & Shop, Wegmans and Weis.

Cargill learned the meat may be contaminated after the Agriculture Department found a problem with a sample of the beef produced on Oct. 8, the company said. The bacteria is E. coli O157:H7.

"No illnesses have been associated with this product," said John Keating, president of Cargill Regional Beef, said in a statement. "We are working closely with the USDA to remove this product from the marketplace."

E. coli is harbored in the intestines of cattle. Improper butchering and processing can cause the E. coli to get onto meat. Thorough cooking, to at least 160 degrees internal temperature, can destroy the bacteria.

E. coli 0157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause bloody diarrhea and dehydration. The very young, seniors and people with compromised immune systems are the most susceptible to E. coli.

Australian Company Pledges to Probe Toxic Toy Beads After Fourth Child Hopitalized
Friday, November 09, 2007

WASHINGTON — The Australian company behind a popular Chinese-made toy found to contain a chemical that converts into a potentially fatal drug when ingested said Friday it was investigating how the toxin ended up in its product.

An 18-month-old boy became the fourth child hospitalized in Australia in recent weeks when he collapsed after eating the toy.

Retailers have pulled millions of the toys, known as Bindeez in Australia and Aqua Dots in the United States, from their shelves this week after scientists found the products contain a chemical that converts into the so-called "date rape" drug gamma hydroxy butyrate when ingested.

The toy, which is produced in China by Australia-based Moose Enterprises, contains colorful beads that can be arranged into designs and fused when sprayed with water.

According to a product description, the toys were supposed to be coated with 1,5-pentanediol, a nontoxic compound found in glue, but instead contained 1,4-butanediol, a potentially harmful chemical widely used in cleaners and plastics.

The New South Wales state health department lists 1,4-butanediol as a possible replacement for gamma hydroxy butyrate, which is known to cause unconsciousness, seizures, drowsiness, coma and death.

Report: Aqua Dots Recalled for Possibly Containing Date Rape Drug Peter Mahon, a spokesman for Moose Enterprises, said the company was still investigating how the chemical came to be included in the toys, which are made at a factory in Shenzhen in China's Guangdong province.

He told The Associated Press the "ingredients were switched at the point of manufacture without Moose's knowledge," but declined to give the name of the factory, saying it was "not appropriate" at this time.

"Really, the main thing we're doing is concentrating our efforts on making people aware that children shouldn't be playing with these products and getting them back," Mahon said in a telephone interview.

Moose Enterprises, which distributes the toys to 40 different countries, placed advertisements in several local and national newspapers Friday urging consumers to return any products, adding that "no person should ingest Bindeez Beads."

Lin Enright, the director of public relations for Australia's Competition and Consumer Commission said officials met with Moose Enterprises on Thursday to discuss what action the company was taking to prevent future contamination of its products, but declined to reveal the outcome of the meeting.

Meanwhile, 18-month-old Matthew Saunder was hospitalized after eating the toy. His father, Glen, told reporters he felt "helpless" watching his son become limp and unresponsive after he gobbled down an unknown quantity of the beads.

"He just appeared intoxicated at the time, then he just went rapidly downhill from there," said Saunder, whose son was in a stable condition after being admitted Thursday. "It was very, very frightening."

At least two children have also been hospitalized in the United States after eating the beads.

China's toy industry came under closer scrutiny earlier this year when U.S. toy giant Mattel Inc. recalled more than 21 million Chinese-made toys worldwide. Products including Barbie doll accessories and toy cars had lead paint or tiny detachable magnets that could be swallowed.

Both 1,4-butanediol and 1,5-pentanediol are manufactured in China and elsewhere, including by major multinational companies, and are also marketed over the Internet.

There is a significant difference in price between the two chemicals.

The Chinese online trading platform ChemNet China lists the price of 1,4 butanediol at between about US$1,350-US$2,800 per metric ton, while the price for 1,5-pentanediol is about US$9,700 per metric ton.

Meanwhile, toy sets seized in Hong Kong were being tested Thursday, a customs official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because of policy. If the tests come back positive for 1,4-butanediol, suppliers in Hong Kong could face a year in jail and fines of US$12,877, she said.

NEWS from CPSC
U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 20, 2007
Release #08-086 CPSC Hotline: (800) 638-2772
CPSC Media Contact: (301) 504-7908

CPSC Delivers the ABC’s of Toy Safety
WASHINGTON, D.C. - As gift-givers shop for that perfect toy this holiday season, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is emphasizing the importance of shopping safely. Knowing your ABC’s of toy safety will make for happy holidays: (A) awareness, and knowing the (B) benefits, for (C) consumers – (Awareness Benefits Consumers).

Awareness is not only knowing there is a CPSC and what the agency does to protect consumers but also being aware of what poses the greatest risks. The leading causes of toy-related fatalities include choking and aspiration of toy parts.

The increased scrutiny of toys and the CPSC has led to B, or benefits, to consumers. CPSC has increased the agency’s inspections of toys and is taking the action needed to remove violative products from the marketplace. More companies are testing their products and reporting possible safety problems.

The Chinese government has signed new agreements to conduct pre-export inspections to prevent lead painted toys and other unsafe toys from being exported to the U.S.

“CPSC recalled 61 toys involving more than 25 million product units in 2007, underscoring CPSC’s daily commitment to keeping consumers safe 365 days a year,” said Acting CPSC Chairman Nancy Nord. “Toys today are undergoing more inspection and more intense scrutiny than ever before.”

Finally C, consumers should stay informed and be aware of recalls by signing up to receive direct e-mail notification of recalls at www.cpsc.gov. CPSC has launched a “Drive to 1 Million” to sign up at least 1 million consumers to receive this direct notification.

Consumers can also be more aware by shopping with CPSC's Top Safe Shopping Tips for this year:

Ride-on Toys – Riding toys, skateboards and in-line skates go fast and falls could be deadly. Helmets and safety gear should be sized to fit.
Small Parts – For children younger than age three, avoid toys with small parts, which can cause choking.
Magnets – For children under age six, avoid building sets with small magnets. If magnets or pieces with magnets are swallowed, serious injuries and/or death can occur.
Projectile Toys – Projectile toys such as air rockets, darts and sling shots are for older children. Improper use of these toys can result in serious eye injuries.
Chargers and Adapters – Charging batteries should be supervised by adults. Chargers and adapters can pose thermal burn hazards to children.
To choose appropriate toys for children:

Be a label reader. Look for toy labels that give age and safety recommendations and use that information as a guide.
Select toys to suit the age, abilities, skills and interest level of the intended child. Look for sturdy construction, such as tightly-secured eyes, noses and other potential small parts.
For all children under 8, avoid toys that have sharp edges and points.
Once the gifts are open:

Immediately discard plastic wrappings on toys before they become dangerous play things.
Keep toys appropriate for older children away from younger siblings or neighbors.
Pay attention to instructions and warnings on battery chargers. Some chargers lack any device to prevent overcharging.

Possible E. coli Contamination Prompts Recall of 96,000 Pounds of Beef
Sunday, November 25, 2007

E-Mail Print Digg This! del.icio.us
GREEN BAY, Wis. — A company voluntarily recalled nearly 96,000 pounds of ground beef products after two people were sickened, possibly by the E. coli bacteria, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service said Saturday.

The beef products by American Foods Group include coarse and fine ground beef chuck, sirloin and chop beef. They were distributed to retailers and distributors in Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Ohio, Tennessee, Wisconsin and Virginia.

The problem surfaced after an investigation by the Illinois Department of Health, which was looking into two reports of illnesses.

The bacteria is E. coli O157:H7. E. coli is harbored in the intestines of cattle. Improper butchering and processing can cause the E. coli to get onto meat. Thorough cooking, to at least 160 degrees internal temperature, can destroy the bacteria.

E. coli O157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause bloody diarrhea and dehydration. The very young, seniors and people with compromised immune systems are the most susceptible to E. coli.

The products subject to recall were produced on Oct. 10. They were distributed for further processing and repackaging and will not have the company's establishment number on the package.

Some of the recommended use-by dates have already expired. In that case, consumers can contact their retailers to see if the products in question were at stores. Consumers are also urged to look in their freezers and return or throw out the products if they find them.

The products include:

—Bulk weight packages of "BEEF, FINE GROUND 73/27." Each shipping label bears a product code of "65000."

—Bulk weight packages of "BEEF, FINE GROUND 75/25." Each shipping label bears a product code of "65800."

—Bulk weight packages of "BEEF SIRLOIN, FINE GROUND 90/10." Each shipping label bears a product code of "66000."
