In the US it would never work, people here don't really want to be equal, they are way too selfish. Not everyone, of course, just enough people to ruin it. That's the same reason why Communism would never work in general. Look atthe book Animal Farm... there will always be pigs who want power. There is always going to be corruption and greed and inequalities... sad, but true.
I was just about to bring this book up, it's so good. If you had a cooperative selfless society it could, but that's highly unlikely.
Unfortunately our society isn't like that.
Animal Farm is based off of the Soviet Union, which I believe I listed during my "communism has never truly been tried" mini speech. Americans have been trained to be effective capitalists. What has been done can be undone.
I've heard from various people that the wait is pretty long. But then again, I've heard from some that it isn't bad at all. I suppose it would depend on what the health issue was. It's hard to get information from movies like Sicko though, because it's so biased towards one side (note: totally not trying to dis it).

I have talked to people with free healthcare (on here) and they said pretty much what Katie said, it depends. I mean, in Canada it can be one way, in England another. So free healthcare, although beneficial to most, could also have it's drawbacks to some.
