A truly memorable story, also, the different arcs make it quite interesting.
To summarize it in a nutshell...
Fate Stay Night is an anime regarding mythology and the Holy Grail. There is a secret organization, of only a few families, who run a tournament every century of two to award the winner the Holy Grail, which entitles the winner to a single wish.
However, all of the contestants must be magi who've summoned a 'Servant'. A 'Servant' is usually a historical figure who's done something great with their life or of the such. It is also known that servants have 'noble phantasms' which represent their mythical character; for example, Heracles has a noble phantasm names after his 12 labors (I'll let the details unravel instead of spoiling it now). In the tournament, 'Servants' must fight to the death or kill the opposing magi to win (there are many other rules that concern the circumstances).
Also, note that the series takes place in mainly Japan.
Another note is that the original Fate Stay Night games were slightly mature due to content, however, the anime is based more for children and a younger audience. _________________ "Never fight a battle you can't win."

It's a good series but, it didn't have a great ending...
Its ending could've changed depending on the arc, though the anime follows the Fate arc for the most part. Personally, I prefer the Unlimited Bladeworks scenario.
Good to hear you're taking an interest, Dark. _________________ "Never fight a battle you can't win."
