|
while waiting in the drs office today i was watching this woman signing a conversation and it made me think...
how would a deaf wizard cast a spell?

I think perhaps they would learn to use nonverbal spells earlier on than most other witches and wizards.

well true he would never know how to exactly pronounce the spell... nor can other handicaped wizards like those who dont hv arm cn cast a spell..i mean they cnt hold wands right..
hmm.. goood thinking though ..yea..pretty tough.. but then may be their family members or loved ones take care of all their needs... just like it happens in muggle world...

yeah, I figure that handicapped peole in the wizarding world would face the same challenges that handicapped people face in the muggle world.
In the muggle world, deaf people learn how to talk. And although their speach is often a little off, they are still understandable.
Handicaps are always going to exists in the muggle world and the wizarding world despite magic potions or whatever. It's up to the person and their community to help them overcome obstacles.

I would just say the spell, haha. I'm deaf and I can speak, but I mostly use sign.  I would rather cast spells non-verbally, though.

I didn't know you were deaf! Perfect, because I have a question.... that you basically already answered but I wanted to go further with it...
Some deaf people prefer sign language, while others opt to learn to talk as much as possible.... while others go for cochlea implants where available.(you know this, others might not which is why i said all that)
So my question is... as a deaf witch, would you prefer signing the spells (assuming it would be possible), speaking the spell, or learning the spell non-verbally. You already said you would prefer it nonverbally... but, and not to put you on the spot, but what do you think would be the more... common preference among the deaf magical community?

Non-verbal incantation would be the common preference, I believe. It really depends on every person, though. I think signing the spells would get a little awkward! Perhaps there's some kind of motion with the wand (wand sign language, haha) that could make casting spells possible for the deaf. However, some deaf people were raised orally, so they'd just say the incantations like a hearing person would.. and with those who were raised manually with a good speech foundation, they'd do the same.

I don't think JKR would envision that beacuse I think that would be degrading to people who were deaf... as if they needed to be cured, ya know? Plus, if they're born with it... you can't really cure something you were born with.

I studied sign language and the deaf culture in college. And no, most of them are happy with how things are because that is their culture and what they know.

I have a Cochlear Implant. I can hear with it just fine, but I rarely use it. My parents forced me to have the surgery. I absolutely had to use it from ages seven (when I had the surgery) to seventeen, when I got in a big fight with my father and ran away from home for a bit. Hah.
I use the CI when I want to listen to music, that's pretty much the only reason why I still have it.
I like being deaf, it's very quiet

lol ok then, never mind, if it was me i would much rather be able to hear because the truth is most ppl dont know sign language so it must be quite isolationg
so i think the magical world might have found a solution for those who desired it, i think it makes sense
