I really wished they would have never changed to title and I just call the first book and movie, Philosopher's Stone.

The US publisher (Scholastic) changed it because they didn't think American kids would find a book title with the word Philosopher in it enticing.

It was changed because Jo's American editors felt that American's wouldn't buy anything that had to do with a philosopher. For me, if it had the British title then I probably would have read it a lot sooner. My best friend's copy of SS layed around in my room for about six months before Carrie finally prodded me to read it.

I had and interest in alchemy, though, and I knew about the philosopher's stone awhile before I ever heard of SS. Seeing a book about the philosopher's stone would have drawn me in like a magnet.

I also think that they should have published both the American and British version here. Americans deserve to be able to read the British version without having to pay more than twice the price of the book after shipping charges.

Why america will not but book with the name of philosopher??

There would be no benefit to learning alchemy, since it has been made obsolete and effectively superceded by Chemistry. However, I did learn some history on alchemy, and it was mildly interesting.

Also, alchemy is the main topic of my second favorite anime/manga: FullMetal Alchemist!

sorceror instead of philospher i guess was for more people to understand and make the film/book seem more approachable

The book was never banned in America. People try to have it banned, but it has never happened.
Scholastic, the US publisher that publishes the books for us thought that kids wouldn't want to read a book with the word "philosopher" in it. Not because the word is offensive, but because the publishers set ridiculously low standards for American children.

Oh, absolutely. Sorcerer's Stone was the number one most banned book in the world. The HP books were never banned widespread in America, though. People have wanted to ban the books for religious purposes, making them the number one most challeneged book in the country. However, the bannings never went though.
Laura Mallory is a very outspoken proponent of banning the Harry Potter books....

America does not allow for books to be banned anymore... although people have tried to challenge that...
