I got a email from someone I know and I haven't been able to figure it out. If you figure it out please post your answer and how you found it. Heres the question:This is a genuine math problem not a trick or a riddle. Just
calculate it exactly as written. Don't make assumptions like
including a bus driver or anything like that. Have fun or commit
suicide!!!

ARE YOU SMARTER THAN A 5TH GRADER?

There are 7 girls on a bus
Each girl has 7 backpacks
In each backpack, there are 7 big cats
For every big cat there are 7 little cats
Question: How many legs are there in the bus?

Oh, math!!

All right I think I did it. Each girl has two legs so right there, that's 14. Just remember that. Each cat has 4 legs and each of the seven girls has seven cats. So 4*7*7 is 196. Now each of the seven big cats has seven little cats. So lets work with one group. 7*7 is 49. so 49*4 legs is 196. And 196 times 7 groups is 1372. Add 1372 to the previous answers of 14 and 196. For a grand total of 1582. That's a lot of legs. Correct me if you think I'm wrong! haha

I agree with mike, The cats don't count because it's a trick question to make you add all of the cats legs in.

Cats do have legs though, and they are technically in the bus.

Ok I figured out the answer. There are 49 backpacks, so that would make 343 big cats, so that would make 1372 big cat's legs. So that would make 9604 little cat's legs plus the 14 girls legs plus the big cats legs. So the grand total would be 10990 legs.

I would hope so o.o
lol

Okay, the answer is none, because the girls aren't in the bus, they are on it.
There is another version to this question... where the question asks
There are 7 girls in a bus
Each girl has 7 backpacks
In each backpack, there are 7 big cats
For every big cat there are 7 little cats
How many legs are there on the bus?

The answer is also zero, because a bus has wheels, not legs!

Mathematically, loony lovegood would be right, with 10990 legs if you really wanted to not take the question as literally as I did. Of coure... it doesn't actually say how many legs the girls or cats have, but I guess we are supposed to assume they all have two and four, respectively.

The fact that we are not supposed to take teh bus driver into account, makes me think that this question is not meant to be taken literally. I'll stick with my answer of zero. Smile

I thought about the bus driver, too, but it could easily assumed that he had not yet boarded the bus. Being on a bus means being inside. You never say you got in a bus. You say that you got on it. It just seems too debatable to be a good riddle, IMO.

I stopped correcting people, because it pisses them off. I just let them stay stupid since that's what they apparently want.

i agree with zen... on a bus could literally mean the legs of a bus, in which case there are none because a bus runs on wheels... but on a bus could also mean inside a bus... it really depends on how you see the phrase "on a bus"... id go for inside a bus... now even if the cats are in the bags, if the bags are inside the bus, then the cats are inside the bus.. so id count their legs as well... and come up with 10990 legs...

it's more than that... 7 big cats, but then there are 7 little cats for everybig cat.... The ASPCA definitely needs to be informed of this brutal crime.

Are these girls jazz fans? I mean, these "cats" could be cats.

heres a math problem for you.. every misdemeanor against an animal is a $1000 fine. and a felony is $2000.

so what would the fine be in this example of cat abuse?

*makes signs and rallys against cat abuse in riddles*

It's not a trick question, my dad got the e-mail and we did it with all the legs, girls and cats too, and it was right. So you need to use the cats' legs too.
