what do the names of the characters mean? what is the meanings behind the words?
just some random ones i found.
draco malfoy- Draco Latin for "dragon". Malfoy Latin for "Bad faith"
accio- latin for "I summon"
Inferi - latin for "those down below; the dead."
krum- means "curves" (LOL!)
longbottom- "staying power"
very interesting!

omg, the search engine is failing me....
This has been doen to death...
I don't even need the mugglenet site to tell you anything you want to know about any of the names....
The names on the Black Family tree are names after stars and constellations... Sirius is the name of the Dog Star, bla blah blah *falls asleep from boredom*

i think Harry's godfather was named Sirius in reference to the brightest star in the Dog constellation, seeing as he's an animagus.

What i want to know was WHY was Lupin called Remus before he became a werewolf as i am guessing the name was taken from the story of Remus And Romulus who were raised by a she-wolf. So it is associated with wolves.

Nymphs are spirits of nature in Greek mythology. They are minor female deities who appear as young, pretty girls, and are the protectors of springs, mountains, and rivers. (Encyclopedia Mythica). A nymph is also a stage of metamorphosis in the insect world.
Tonks turned out to be a metamorphmagus.
'Bellatrix' is Latin for "female warrior;" also the name of a brilliant star in the constellation Orion that is sometimes called "the Amazon star."
Bellatrix was the only female death eater and very much a fighter.

I never understood where Narcissa came from. The other ones in the family are named after stars or constellations but she's named after a flower (my birth flower  )

Ah... right i never knew that. Anyway... Maybe JKR never thought about the names and just named them to thier abilities and didnt think thier abilities came after they were named

The Malfoys are a whole family full of pureblood snobs, so I'd say "Narcissa" fits perfectly. (narcissism=self-love / egotism)
I just realized I'm a little slow on the uptake. I was almost done with Deathly Hallows before I realized: Remus Lupin. Remus, as in Romulus and Remus. Lupin, as in lupo, as in wolf. I felt like such an idiot that it took so long for it to dawn on me, lol. |

Yep, and Fenrir was a giant wolf in Norse mythology.

I knew this before but also I knew all of the names and things J.K Rowling picked for her book were based on Myths or just different langaged words as seen above with nameds.

there's an ancient Greek myth 'bout a lad Narcissus who died from the love for himself having seen his bounce in water :) and from his blood drops grew a flower narcissus. it's about resurrection and ego.
and just a beautiful name :)

I think Bianca meant that the name itself doesn't fit in with the rest of the Black family names, since the rest of them came from stars and constellations. Narcissa's name came from the flower, which was named after that character in the myth. Both the flower and the mythical character's name fits Narcissa's character, nicely, I think.

Yeah, it fits her personality and all, it only stuck out as not being from the same source as the rest of the names.
Interestingly, I've read other sources which claim that the flower name 'narcissus' actually stems from the Greek narke or narkao, both of which have to do with numbness and are the roots of the word 'narcotic.' It makes sense, because narcissus bulbs contain a narcotic substance. So maybe Narcissa was not only vain, but mind-numbingly boring

Yes, indeed. Narcissus was a young man in Greek mythology whom was dubbed one of the most handsome (if not the most handsome) man at the time. His story was intertwined with a girl named Echo who loved Narcissus with her utmost soul.
As the story would happen, Narcissus came across a pond and caught a glimpse of his reflection and fell in love with it. Echo waited by his side and called to him, but her pleas fell on deaf ears, for Narcissus would not budge from his spot by the pond until he died. Relentlessly calling to him, Echo became nothing more than an echo (her body died soon after Narcissus did).
However, there are other versions of the myth which claim that he fell in love with his twin sister. Not only that, but when she died, at an early age, he let his gaze fall upon his reflection so as to try to imagine his sister staring back (seeing as how they were twins in many ways, including looks). He eventually passed away.
Note that in every (or most) versions, flowers grew in the spot where he perished, a gift from the gods.
Also, it is noted that Narcissus means something along the lines of vain and ironically 'narcissistic' (a word named after the man of myth).
