It just came to my mind when I was reading the chapter The House of Gaunts that Dumbledore had to be parselmouth because if he wasn't he would not understand a word from the memory of Ogden. What do you think?
If Dumbledore wasn't a Parselmouth, then he would have heard some hissing sounds, and he must have guessed that Morfin is speaking Parseltongue. But I still think he is a Parselmouth. _________________ Never miss a good chance to shut up!

Regulus Arcturus Black

Well for a change I think that Dumbledore isn't a parclemouth. If he was he would of been able to talk to snakes. Only Harry and Voldermort are parclemouth. There. _________________
I personally don't think he is. Is there a possibility that maybe he has done extensive study into the language to understand it? I mean the man can or rather could speak mermish! _________________ "WAR IS PEACE

I don't believe he is, I think he would of known more about the Chamber of Secerts if he did.
That's good point. Dumbledore would have heard the voices Harry heard. Remember how he got rid of the snake Voldemort set on him during the duel in the Ministry? He had to use his wand. _________________ Draco Dormiens Nunquam Titillandus
Isn't it possible that when the snakes speak persletounge it sounds different than when the humans speak it. In Chamber during the dueling scene Harry speaks persletounge and it sounds like a language. So maybe he heard and understood the two Riddles but he himself does not speak or understand persletounge when snakes speak it, so he couldn't possibly haveunderstood the basilisk.
Or the more mandane explanation as to how he didn't need a translation could be he deducted the meaning from Tom's actions before and after the encounter. _________________ "WAR IS PEACE

Hmm. I'm not really sure. Dumbledore is one of the most powerful wizards in the universe - like Hocrux said, he can even speak Mermish! - so I think that it's a fair bet that somewhere along the line, Dumbledore learned how to speak Parseltongue.
Hmmm...I'm not so sure that I'm going to say that Dumbledore speaks it simply based on that one thing. I suppose he could have learned it somewhere along the way, but I don't want to say he definitely did. He may have found out some other way what the Gaunts were saying.
i dont think so becaus harry, isa parselmouth, didnt realize they were speaking another language until the ministyr official (forgot his name) couldnt understand them. dd knew right away ther were speaking the snake talk _________________ but perhaps those who are best suited to power are those who have never sought it. Well maybe he can understand it, but I don't think he can speak it.
The only way that you could get the ability to speak parselmouth is by inheritance (if you father or mother is one). And since JK said Harry wasn't related to Dumbledore... _________________ Nederlands!!
dumbledore never said he could understand what was being said in the gaunt house. maybe he could have guessed and/or he could have just used harry for it. _________________
I reckon that to be a parcelmouth is an uncommon gift, it's quite rare.
There's no indication in the text that Dumbledore can speak it, so I'd guess that he can't.
If he could, he would have known the Basilik was free and being controlled in the Chamber of Secrets, as he would have "heard" and understood it like Harry. _________________ Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.
"You're not welcome",
"Er - I'm sorry - I don't understand you," said Ogden nervously.
Harry thought that Ogden was being extremely dim; the stranger was making himself very clear in Harry's opinion, particularly as he was brandishing a wand in one hand and a short and rather bloody knife in the other.
"You understand him, I'm sure, Harry?" said Dumbledore quietly.
"Yes, of course," said Harry, slightly nonplussed. "Why can't Ogden -?"
But as his eyes found the dead snake on the door again, he suddenly understood.
"He's speaking Parseltongue?"
"Very good," said Dumbledore, nodding and smiling.
So the text doesn't support either argument. But it doesn't say that Dumbledore understood what he was hearing, it could be that what he saw, told the story. _________________ Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.
By making Dumbeldore a parselmouth you're lessening the relationship between Harry and Voldemort. I don't think JKR would have done that. When Dumbledore talked to Morfin to extract some of his memories, he could have forced him or tricked him into translating it.
I agree. I don't think Dumbedore is a parcelmouth, he only guessed that Harry could or was translating the snake language, which of course, Harry was. Dumbledore couldn't translate it himself. _________________ Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.
