lol i dont exactly hate it, but yeah its kind of annoying, cause to me they are quite different

of course there may be some part of the anime that looks a bit like cartoons, but there's a whole side of anime that doesnt even compare to it

Technically they are cartoons.

They are JAPANESE cartoons. That's exactly the definition. They are animated shows. Just like.. say.. X-Men Evolution or Steamboat Willy.

Of course, most of them can't be compared to American cartoons due to the sheer beauty in animation.

The thing is, people have different interpretations of what something is or isn't, so you can't get pissy over what they call something when they do, in fact, fit into a specific catagory if only just barely.

Unless you mean when people call american cartoons "anime" and I completely misinterpreted the question you asked, then yes, they are completely different, because Anime is caracterized by the eyes, the mouth movements and the animation style.

Thats not why I was upset. I was browsing through a list of anime torrents the other day seeing what was new and i couldn't stand it because people kept adding in things like "Tom and Jerry" and "Shrek". It's like...wtf ?

Also, Anime is more for adults or kids above the ages of 14-16 where as cartoons would be for almost any age.

I feel that notion. Anime are cartoons but theyre a special type and deserve their own category to go by.

all anime are cartoons, not all cartoons are anime. like squares and rectangles.

and not all cartoons are for kids (simpsons, family guy, southpark) and some anime is for kids.

so no I'm not bugged when they categorize it as cartoons. but they should not be putting tom and jerry is the anime category lol. that is annoying.

It's kind of annoying when they catagorize it as cartoons. Because then you get all the little kids trying to watch stuff like Death Note. Also, I think that by catagorizing it as a cartoon, they take the true art aspect out of it.

I hate it when people refer to western cartoons as anime just because they're animation. No.

I agree Spongenbob is not 'anime'. The art style between anime and cartoon is completely diffrent and they sort of take away from the art aspect when they just lump it all together. And most anime isnt ment for kids younger then say 13 where as most cartoons are usually targeted to children 10 and under

This reminds me, did you happen to catch "Superman: Doomsday" this Saturday on Toonami?

Not exactly. I just think Avatar is a really bad imitation of the style. But the fact is, there are different styles and don't even look close to generic anime that come from Japan and they are still considered anime...so I guess origin does play a part.
