If this has been discussed already (which I'm sure it has), then you don't exactly need to keep reading...

Now, I know this may and most likely will raise some controversy (if the topic is viewed and replied to enough), but I personally think that Harry Potter should be taught or in the very least, read to young students in class. Although this may never happen because of the religious right in the country, but it would be something that could be enjoyed and open more childrens' minds to the imagination that J.K. Rowling was so brilliant as to bestow upon us.

I'm personally against it.
Although it's for other reasons.
From personal experience I can say that HP is very addicting.
So schoolwork will definitely suffer. Smile

At my school we have this thing where you read the selected book and have lunch with the other kids that also read it and talk about it in the library. I asked the librarina if HP could be one and she simply said no.

SS was read to me in the third grade. its been read to small children prolly for years! (btw this was when it first came out in the US so it was long long time ago and i remember in fifth grade i moved to another school and they read the last chapters to PoA)

I was never read HP in my elementary school, or rather, any school I ever attended. My sister, however, was read to from it by her teacher a couple weeks ago and it just made me think about this topic.

On my own, I started reading HP when it first came out (when I was seven). That was... wow... eleven years ago! Holy crap, I'm old! lol

in yr eight english we read it and watched star wars and had to write an essay on the similarities. they've had to do that in year eight every year for i don't know how many years.
i loved doing that. i don't know about it being compolsary for all schools but i think it would be a good book for all school to consider putting on the curriculum.

I think it would be a great idea to teach it in school. The one thing that i think is suffering in america at least is that kids don't value the written word so much. If you ask someone if they would rather read the book or watch the movie, most would say watch the movie and it saddens me because i pride myself on being an avid reader. Harry potter is a very addictive series and I believe it would interest students to pursue other works of literature. as for the religious aspect...i don't really care. Every work of fiction can be brought to parallels of religious figures and the fact that it deals with supernatural/wizardry, doesn't count for anything. This is a story of compassion, the power of love and family, facing fear, facing death and ultimately coming to grips with mortality. What i have listed is only the tip of the iceberg and every student should have the chance...at least the option of reading this wonderful series.

what i don't get is why do realy religious people read lord of the rings and not harry potter when lord of the rings, it seems, would be much more offensive to these people cause at least in HP they celibrate religius holidays? that just doesn't make sense

anyways at university you can get a diploma in Harry Potter studies

You know what? Too many people would recognize the flaws in the book if it were being formally taught, and may refuse to study it as legitimate literature. I always say that if Rowling had written Star Wars, half the characters who had died on the Death Star in the first movie would have come back in The Empire Strikes Back. she is THAT inconsistent.

i went to school before harry potter but i think it is an excellent idea to have it in schools. too many kids now a days dont read and the allure of magic and violence can bring forth literacy.
