After Galatea Merrythought retired in 1945, there was an unamed teacher that taught for about twenty years. That was when Voldemort jinxed the job. That makes over 25 proffessors that lasted for only one year. So who were these people?
Here are a few of my thoughts:

*Andormeda Black, 1974-1975 (retired after disowned by mother for marrying a "Mudblood")

*Gideon Prewett, 1977-1978 (killed by Death Eaters)

*Dorcas Meadows, 1978-1979 (killed by Voldemort)

*Sirius Black, 1981 (framed for Pettigrew’s murder)

*Horace Slughorn, 1983-1984 (retired)

*Mrs. Lovegood, 1989-1990 (died)

Any other ideas?

I Don't think slughorn ever taught dada...didn't he insist on potions? either that or dd didn't think he was capable of teaching dada or that it wasn't a good idea.

the others are possible. sirius being an especially interesting candidate

It couldn't have been Sirius because he would have been too young to have been a prof at Hogwarts. Tom was turned away with that reason.
And I don't think it was Andromeda because I think we would have heard of something bad happening to her while teaching there.
It wasn't Slughorn, he was the Potions prof there, remember he taught Lily Potions.
The others are interesting ideas, though.

Definitely not Sirius. He`s just not a teacher kind. And Slughorn did Potions.

Slughorn didn't say that Potions was the only subject he taught, though deffinately his most constant. And Dumbledor did comment on what an exceptional wizard he is in resisting being cunfounded or impiriused. Sounds like someone who'd be good at D.A.D.A.

Good point about Sirius though.

I guess anyone is possible, even Slughorn. Quirrell was the Muggle Studies teacher before moving to the DADA post, so you might say that Slughorn could have takin the post for one year and then moved back to Potions.

*Just thought of something*

Does anyone think that maybe DD kept Snape away from the DADA position because he felt/knew it was cursed?

Maybe . . . I know that Snape told Bellatrix that DD kept him away from the position so that he wouldn't relapse and fall back into the dark arts.

Another good question is, if the position was cursed then why did Snape want it?

I think that either Snape didn't realize it was cursed or he thought he would prevail despite it.

I don`t think he cared or thought he`d avoid it. He just liked thye Dark Arts and knew more than anyone else about them. He actually could have thought a lot. He always had a passion for DA.

well the position was originally cursed because of voldy and as snape was on voldy's side (or at least thats what voldy thought) then he knew no one would try anything against him

I don't think he would have taken off the curse. We don't even know how the curse worked.

do u really think its a curse? it sounds more to me like voldy did something to the DADA teachers so they couldnt continue teaching, although that wouldnt explain how it continued on his weak period

I know we don`t but Voldemort trusted Snape so he would have wanted him to teach DADA, so he could seed the love for DA in children or something.

Snape was the DADA prof in HBP. And he had to flee the school because his reputation was ruined. He died with everyone thinking he was a murderer. Voldemort did not lift the curse for him, assuming it was liftable.

I said above, we don't know what kind of curse it is.
We know it's a some kind of curse, DD said so. Unless he was mistaken. The fact that it continued on during his weak period makes me think it was a curse.
