He'll live on in Harry's heart. That enough for me. I'm not ever going to condone alcoholic mothers. They suck at being mothers. _________________

Winky had a choice, even if she was oppressed. No one forced her to drink. _________________

She wasn't being forced to work when she became an alcoholic. Wuite the opposite was true, actually. _________________

I do wonder what it would have been like to see Dobbys children. As for Winky being a mother I doubt she would constantly drink butterbeer while watching the children. (Also, It isn't alcohol) I do agree she took the wrong path when she decided to get drunk off butter beers but I am sure she would have moved on to raise her kids, if she had any, and taken good care of them.
hmm, I wonder if they would have been rebellious like there father or loyal like winky. _________________ Join Reality Of It All!!! |

It's alcohol for a house-elf. She got drunk off of it. I don't see her changing her ways for children, though. She lived to serve the Crouches and no child could make up for her loss. _________________

she might change her ways if she found out she was pregnant, but she'd like be so before that...and there might have been damage to the kids. but what is interesting to me here is...those babies would be born free. what sort of life could they look forward to? it seems their best bet would be grow up and work at hogwarts...some future. or would things be better by then and they could find better more promising jobs? what would happen if they fell in love with an enslaved elf? how would that marriage work?
how fast do they even grow up? how long is a pregnancy?
wow this is very interesting. _________________

I agree with that zengrenouille... My real mother was an alcaholic and i lived with her until i was 4 when my dad and step mother got custody of me... Every payday she would spend all the rent and food money on Booze and neglect me and my Brother and Sister. I havent seen her since though and do not want to _________________ Wand: 10' Rowan with Phoenix feather core

I don't think Dobby and Winky had anything romantic going on.
But the thought of little Dobby's is very cute! _________________

The fact that you said Winky and Doby, I do not agree. If someone else was the mother than sure that would be adorable. _________________

This brings all sorts of questions to my mind! If house elves are required to serve their wizard family until they die...when are they able to have babies? Do their children follow the same line as their parents and continue to serve that wizarding family?
Where are all of the baby house elves? How long do they live?
There probably are no answers to any of that, but it made me wonder |

I wonder if the wizards breed them, like horses. And they get sold off to other wizarding families when they are old enough to work. What a horrible thought. _________________

Awww. Poor little elves. I guess that's historically was done with slaves, so it is very possible. Well, not the breeding part, but selling them off. |

I remember reading a discussion on this years ago on another forum, and I searched around the internet for something about it yesterday. I could have sworn that Jo said something on this subject, but I can't find anything.
Anyway . . . for some reason my brain is telling me that house elves breed when their owners tell them to. I don't think that they can sell house eles, though. I think that house elves are tied to thte houses that they are born into unless freed. In which case they aren't tied to any houses. What I wonder is what happens to the elves when the houses are destroyed. _________________

So, the owner would have to have two elves in order for them the breed? _________________

yes, of course I don't know if this is the actual rule. For some reason while fishing around for bits of the conversation from years ago, I came up with these bits. I don't remember if it was just a theory or not. _________________

I think it's just a theory. Because, well, look at the Malfoys. They were supposed to be so rich, but they only had one house-elf. You would think they would get another one so they could have more of them. Or the Blacks. Kreacher was so old as it was. You would think Mrs. Black would have thought to obtain another elf so that Grimmauld Place would always have an elf after Kreacher passed on. I dunno, but I would like to know from JKR how enslaved the elves were, you, know, if they were allowed to be with an elf of their choice or if they were strictly forced to breed. Or maybe their marriages were arranged, like the royals. _________________

^ That statement sounded wrong. I meant it as I don't know whether it is just a theory I read or something the I created in my brain. I tend to concentrate my thought into incpmprehensible sentences. I know it's not a fact, or else I would have found it somewhere by now. I've been driving myself nuts looking for information on the procreation of house elves. _________________
