In chapter 12, when Harry is escaping from the library and gets lost (before finding the mirror of Erised), it says:

Quote:
There was a suit of armor near the kitchens, he knew, but he must be five floors above there.

meaning that he knows where the kitchens are.

However, in GoF it seems that he has no idea until Fred and George tell Hermione, for example (ch. 19):

Quote:
"You know, I'm starting to think it's time for more direct action. I wonder how you get into the school kitchens?"
"No idea, ask Fred and George," said Harry.

Any ideas?

Some suggestions...
Harry figured they must be somewhere near the lower floors, but he didn't know the exact location.
After you pass the suit of armor, then what? Maybe he needed directions for that.
Also, Harry didn't want anything to do with Spew, instead of answering the question he pawned it off onto someone else.

I like that one.

Another reason might be that he heard some one say that there was a suit of armor near the kitchens. He didn't recognize where he was, so maybe he recalled that some one mentioned a suit of armor near the kitchens, which he wouldn't recognize since he had never been there.

^ Umm... Aren't there suits of armor all over the castle?

As for GinnyX's theory, the way it's described when Hermione leads him to the kitchens, it seems he only realizes that they're approaching the kitchens when they arrive at the fruit bowl portrait which George (or was it Fred?) told her about, and had he known the location before he would have realized it earlier (not to mention that the book is from his pov so we would know if he knew).

There are, but since Harry knew most of the corridors already. In this case, he was in an unfamiliar corridor, so he was looking for a hint as to which corridor he was in. He saw the suit of armor, and he recalled that there was a suit of armor near the kitchens. If he had never been near the kitchens but heard that there was a suit of armor near them, them that would explain why he made this observation.

Yeah but Hermione and Harry didnt ask where they were, they just asked how to get in, which you do by tickling the pear isnt it?

I'd imagine that they knew roughly where they were, because aren't the kitchens near the Hufflepuff dorms?

Weirdest suggestion yet. But maybe the suit of armour smelled and wasn't it so Harry thought he was near the kitchens, or as GinnyX said.
