In the HP books being a good mother is a constant motif. Some examples are
Narcissa even tho she is associated with the death eaters and stuff she still loves her son; Malfoy. She makes the umbreakable vow.
With Mrs. Potter she gives up her own life for Harry when they were killed by Voldemort.
Mrs. Weasly saves her daughter and risks her own life by stepping in and killing Bellatrix LeStrange.
It seems appropriate for the books to be about moms and there relashionships to the kids and being a good mother because she herself is a mother. _________________

They say money cant buy happiness, but it can sure as hell buy everything else.
I think it's also very interesting that she had Mrs. Weasley be the one to finish off Bellatrix. There Bellatrix was, going after her daughter and mocking her son... JKR said she had known all along that she wanted Molly to be the one to finish off Bellatrix beacuse she wanted to show what a mother could do.
JKR said this in an interview to the Dutch newspaper "The Volkskrant"
Spoiler:
And is there a mother in there who might resemble you? You're not the Molly Weasley-type.
˜Well, a little bit, I hope. Years ago someone wrote: she characterizes Molly Weasley as a mother who is only at home looking after the children. I was deeply offended, because I till a year before that had also been such a mother who was at home all the time taking care of her child – for the outside world at least. What has lesser status and is more difficult then raising a child? And what is more important? Molly had seven! I think Molly is a terrific woman."
She does commit a murder.
"Yes in book seven she kills Bellatrix- she is the only woman on the good side who kills. I saw Molly and Bellatrix standing opposite of each other for a long time; two completely different characters, who each show a very feminine side of love. The pure and protecting love of Molly, and the obsessive, perverse of Bellatrix. Those two feminine types of energy against each other. That was very satisfying to write."
I actually wrote an essay on this...let me see if I still have it
but yeah, tahts one thing i really love. no matter what side of the tracks you're on, moms are moms. I actually had a really cool theory that voldy would be pissed draco didn't do it himself and try to kill him, but narcissa dies for him. she totally would.
here's the thingy i wrote
Spoiler:
In Potterverse there are 3 main mother figures: Lily Potter, Molly Weasley and Narcissa Malfoy. Time, death and war stand between them but yet they have so much in common: mainly their love for their children. Their greatest fear and the worst thing that could possibly happen to them is the death of their offspring; as it would be for any loving mother, be she muggle or wizard.
To me this makes them very remarkable women. Yes, this includes Narcissa, the snooty Death Eater’s wife. I find her pleas of “My son…my only son” and “Why Severus, why my son?” to be highly reminiscent of Lily’s cries of “Not Harry, not Harry, please not Harry!” Nobody would argue the fact that Lily loved her son more than life itself and that she was very noble to die for him. But I got the feeling that Narcissa was willing to die for her son as well. She’d do anything for Draco, even committing the ultimate sacrifice. This levels the playing field in the mommy department and earned her some of my respect.
The bulk of my attention will be focused on Molly Weasley. She is the only mother we have seen in more than a couple of chapters; the only one we’ve really seen in action. She is the mother of 7 healthy and for the most part happy children as well as a surrogate mum for the protagonist of this saga. She cooks, she cleans, she sows and she nags; everything your stereotypical matriarch of a nuclear family should do. But most importantly she gives them love. I think the best evidence (I can’t imagine why you’d every need any) of this is her boggart. When faced with this being it turns one by one into her family members (Harry included!), all of them dead. Her worst nightmare (literally, she said she dreamt about it) was played out in front of her she was unable to cope due to her distress (The Woes of Mrs. Weasley; Half-Blood Prince).
Molly also provides us with perhaps my favorite HP moment; the Hug. This I think sums up her relationship was Harry: a mother, but not quite.
“Mrs Weasley set the potion down on the bedside cabinet, bent down, and put her arms around Harry. He had no memory of every being hugged like this, as though by a mother. The full weight of everything he had seen that night seemed to fall in upon him as Mrs. Weasley held him to her. His mother’s face, his father’s voice and the sight of Cedric dead on the ground all started spinning in his head until he could hardly bear it, until he was screwing up his face against the howl of misery fighting to get out of him.” (The Parting of the Ways; page 714, Goblet of Fire, US Edition.)
She can help him through his pain, guide him along the way, give him the love care and nurturing he has never received but yet she could never take Lily’s place in his heart. She could never fill the void that she left since it was left empty for so long. Perhaps if she had cared for him since birth he could really call her his mother, but she came along too late.
My point is, no matter how black a heart is, a mother’s instinct, love and devotion will win out. (Unless they’re just a crappy mother of course.) Here’s to Molly, Lily and Cissy; here’s to all those mothers out there to whom their children are their world. I hope that someday I can be as good a mother to mine as they are to theirs. I certainly hope I’ll never have to make the sacrifice that Lily made; though I hope I’d be willing to make it.
The article I posted was translated from a Dutch paper... so some words got lost in translation... or, rather, font. It's unfortunate, but there ya have it. _________________

Well, some dads aren't Assholes . . . James (even though he's dead), Frank Longbottom (even though he's mentally checked out0, Arthur Weasley . . . just like some moms suck like Merope and Mrs. Black. _________________
I seem to remember jk saying in the documentary thing that she was never very close to her dad, but she was really close to her mum. that'd explain it. _________________
if i wasnt a mom myself i would not have believed that mollys character, as she was previously written could have the power to kill bellatrix.
even harry who beat the most powerful wizard when he was but 11 yrs old was not powerful enough (or meant it enough) to take out snape at the end of HBP,
but as a mom... when i see my lil guy get pushed to the ground when playing with other kids, or when i hear someone say something bad about him i can see mollys personality changing and i absolutely believe she could kill bellatrix.
you never know what true love is until you look into your child's eyes.
and only moms can understand that, thats why it was believable because JK is a mom and knows exactly what it feels like to know love. _________________

like ever since book six narissa earned this amazzing respect from me.
she didnt care what side she was on anymore. she didnt care if she died, if the good side won, if the bad side won, if she got sent to azkaban. all she cared about was her son and thats a big thing for a voldemort follower who is a slytherin. slytherins chose themselves over everybody else. and if bellatrix mrs black and narissa were asked to hand over there children to get killed mrs black and bellatrix would obviously do it willingly. narissa wouldnt.
i was so proud of her when voldemort asked her to check if harry was alive and she lied. i mean yes harry did her favour by telling her where draco was but usually a normal slytherin would still tell the truth to voldy even if harry did them a favour. narissa had it comming for a while but i think it was there and then narissa finally realised that voldemort had to be defeated and what he was doing was wrong.
she used to be one of my hated characters but now she is one of my many liked characters. _________________

I've always had issues with the part (I forget which book) when Arthur Weasley is offered a better paying job with the Ministry but doesn't take it, because he likes his current job better. I know it was supposed to show that the quality of his character and that he doesn't care about money. But at the same time, the man has a struggling family. Like it or not the responsible thing, in my mind, would have been to take the better paying job for the sake of his wife and kids. _________________ I don't have a lot of experience with vampires, but I have hunted werewolves. I believe you mean the part when Ron tells Harry and Hermone that his father could have moved up, but he chose to continue working with muggles and Hermione says she understands.
I think his family would respect him more if he chose to work for what he believed in. The Weasleys were poor, but they weren't unhappy. The sacrfices they made only brought them closer together and made them appreciate whatthey did have. They never went hungry or cold, so I don't think his turning down a higher paying job was really the worse thing he could have done. In some ways, it worked out to be the best. _________________
