What is an elementalist? I couldn't find it anywhere! Maybe not looking good enough but still. Looking at the name someone or somebody who could control a particular element?!

An Elementalist is someone who controls one of the four elements.
Fire.
Water.
Earth.
Wind.
Its someone who has master one of the four elements or has mastered all four elements.

Elementalist? I think.... maybe some of you have been playing a little too much WoW or that Guild Wars thing... I think some people might be cofusing role playing and HP canon.

The only times elements are really mentioned in HP are when theorists, like myself who have perhaps too much time on their hands, wonder if each House is represented by an element. Gryffindor would be fire, Ravenclaw would be air, Hufflepuff would be Earth, and Slytherin would be water. Or is it Slytherin is Earth and Hufflepuff would be water? Well, anyway, that is the only time the elements are mentioned concerning HP that I'm aware of, except, of course, role playing games.

I read in an interview by JKR that she corresponded the houses with the elements, and GinnyX, you were correct in your guess. She said that Gryffindor was Fire, Ravenclaw was Air, Hufflepuff was Earth, and Slytherin was Water. You might remember a lot about a blazing fire in the Gryffindor common room, and I've also read that the Sytherin common room was under the black lake. I think it was in the same interview that I read that.

^ Also, the ravenclaw common room is very open and airy. Plus its mascot is a bird.

Then there is Hufflepuff. It's mascot is a badger, which digs tunnels in the earth. The common room is basically under Hogwarts, and the dorms are found through tunnels, like a badger.

I just read about the Hufflepuff commom room in the lexicon, but I always knew that there was a reason that I adamantly did not want to be a hufflepuff. It's not that there is anything wrong with huffs, but now I realize that I could no live in those dorms. It just seems depressing to live in tunnels under Hogwarts. I prefer the airy ravenclaw tower over-looking the mountains.

JKR: Probably. I hear you. It is the tradition to have four houses, but in this case, I wanted them to correspond roughly to the four elements. So Gryffindor is fire, Ravenclaw is air, Hufflepuff is earth, and Slytherin is water, hence the fact that their common room is under the lake. So again, it was this idea of harmony and balance, that you had four necessary components and by integrating them you would make a very strong place. But they remain fragmented, as we know.

^ I never even heard or thought of it myself until I first saw this thread. Then I researched the use of the elements in HP, and I came across that quote. It was hard to find again. I had to put a few different types of wording into accio quote. I ended up finding it with "elements houses." It seems so simple, but it took me awhile . . .

I mean the elements that their house represent.
HP is for example fiery.?

Interesting hypothesis. However, I find it distasteful how some houses are portrayed in contrast to others. Though, it is quite unique...

Anyways, the question regarding an elementalist:

An elementalist is a person who uses or is adept at controlling a single or multiple elements. These elements are usually depicted as fire, water, wind, and earth (the alchemic elements). However there are other elements which appear in eastern mythology such as wood, metal, lightning, light (heaven), dark (earth/hell), and other such. Usually, an elementalist is portrayed as a user of magic or a natural user due to genetics, or something along the lines.

Elementalists have appeared in a number of places such as in books, games, movies, and even in real life (usually in the pagan and druidic practices.

Also, note that such things as ki, chakkra, aether, ether, quintessence, and mana do not count as elements. They are purely spiritual power which comes from the soul. However, mana is debatable due to its composition. As a whole is not considered elemental energy, but it is composed of the four alchemic elements (supposedly), thus it is debatable.

Anyways, that's my two bits.

Hey, thanks for the update.
I did know what an elementalist was essentially.
I thought they were mentioned in one of the HP books.
So my question was; what's an elementalist in HP.

..though in HP, for as far as i know, no one actually follows one certain element. All characters have relatively equal knowledge of the different elements. Plus, there are certain spells which can't really be sorted onder any of the four.

As for the students of each house, they can also have characteristics based on it's repective element. It doesn't necesarily have to be their magic power.
