Chapter One: An Unexpected Arrival
As warm and bright as it was outside the window of number 4 Privet Drive, Harry Potter was anything but cheerful. The last three months had dragged on sluggishly for him while the Dursley’s and the rest of the world continued on with their daily lives. It was different for Harry though, he had lost the last person that was connected to his family. He feared nothing would ever be the same again which was one of the reasons he had virtually locked himself away from the world, not answering letters from even his best friends. The windows of Harry’s bedroom were closed letting in just slivers of light at a time while a dim lamp next to the bed was slowly shining. Harry’s tall, lanky body was strewn across the bed as he stared at the ceiling. His hair, which had grown long over the summer, was hanging over his eyes gently curling on the ends from the humid august weather. He slowly raised his arm and pushed his hair to the side so he could see again and returned to the same position he had been in for 2 hours now. Sirius’s death had hit him hard, and though Ron and Hermione claimed through letters that they knew what he was going through, they did not. They hadn’t lost everyone near and dear to them, they couldn’t possible understand. A familiar stinging on Harry’s scar surfaced again. He pressed the heel of his hand to his forehead to ease the pain when—
BOOM!
Harry jumped up from his bed and looked nervously around to see what had caused the blast. Several seconds passed when all that could be heard was Harry’s deep, rhythmic breath. His eyes moved across the room again. Was he under attack? Had Death Eaters found him? That was impossible! Thoughts were racing through Harry’s mind and he didn’t know what to believe until he heard a slight tapping on his window. His breath quickly silenced and he steadily moved his head to face the window. There was more tapping. Harry got to his feet and slowly edged his way to the window. He jumped as Hedwig stirred in her cage but quickly turned back to the closed window. Was this a trap? Putting his thoughts behind him, Harry pulled the curtains open letting a flood of light enter the room and had to shield his eyes from the sun with his hand. After a few moments, he let his hand down only to see a small owl looking utterly confused on his windowsill. “You’ve got to be kidding me,” Harry whispered as he rolled his eyes. He opened the window, let the owl in, and took the letter it seemed to have been carrying. Hedwig was eager to see the other owl so Harry opened her cage and let her fly freely throughout his room and examine the new visitor.
Harry moved the letter around in his hands. It didn’t say who it was from. He had almost hoped that it was a letter from Sirius that had been found after his death and sent to Harry. With a tiny glint of hope, he opened the parchment and found only three words.
BEWARE. WE’RE COMING.
Harry gasped as he dropped the letter and quickly ran to shut the windows. It was a set up! He fumbled for his wand which was still packed in his Hogwarts suitcase from last year. He stood in the center of his room turning every which way with his wand at the ready. Was Voldemort himself coming? No- WE’RE COMING. He was bringing Death Eaters! Voldemort was smart; he would attack Harry while he was depressed and weak.
Suddenly there was another loud bang. Something had hit the house. Harry raised his wand higher. BOOM! Again, another blow to the house.
“What the bloody hell is going on up there!” Vernon Dursley screamed from downstairs.
One last hit to the house and the window shattered. Harry shielded his eyes from the blast and waited. Nothing. His heart was beating fast as his eyes fixed upon the hole in the wall.
CRACK!
Two figures apparated into the room and Harry fell backwards. “Hiya Harry!” The voices of Fred and George Weasley chimed throughout the room. “Sorry ‘bout the mess, we’ll clean that right up. Reparo!”
Harry angrily got to his feet. “What the hell are you doing?! I thought—!” Harry was breathing so quickly that he couldn’t finish the sentence.
“Calm down mate,” Fred seized Harry by the shoulders to settle him. “We were only having a bit of fun!” George laughed.
“Oh yeah, sending me threats and practically bombing my bedroom sounds like loads of fun!”
“Look, we can see you’re a tad bit mad—,”
“MAD?” Harry yelled as he shook himself away from Fred’s grasp. “I though Voldemort was coming to KILL ME! And why on earth did you have to blow a hole in my wall?”
Fred and George looked at each other a smiled. “Dramatic effect.”
Harry smiled slightly for the first time all summer. George noticed, “Now there’s the Harry we know and love! Look, we just thought you needed some fun. You can’t spend the rest of your summer cooped up in this old, mangy bedroom, now can you? C’mon, pack up your stuff and we’ll get over to the Burrow just in time for dinner. Ron and Hermione are worried sick.”
“George, you’re sounding like Mum!” Fred jokingly punched George on the shoulder which caused George to fire back as well. While the twins continued to hit each other, Harry packed a few more things in his suitcase that hadn’t been open since last year, grabbed Hedwig, and placed his wand safely in his pocket. Fred and George noticed Harry was ready and they promptly stopped, somewhat embarrassed that they had been acting like children. Harry smiled again and knew things were looking better already.
“Ready then? I wouldn’t let go if I were you.” Fred and George held onto Harry, his suitcase, and Hedwig’s cage as they apparated into the living room of the Burrow and immediately Harry could smell the delicious food that Mrs. Weasley was preparing for dinner.

Chapter Two: An Abiding Hope
The warm summer sun was setting along the horizon as large dark clouds approached ominously in the distance. A girl stood staring blankly into the frosted pink and yellow sunset. The gentle breeze pushed her long hair out of place and she slowly brought her hand up to tuck the section behind her ear revealing a tear that had fallen down her face. She looked across the hills strewn with gravestones, thousands of them, and shut her eyes pushing more tears out. The wind blew harder as a warning of the incoming storm. She couldn’t move her feet, she had to stay just a little longer.
“Anna?”
She opened her eyes but did not move, even as a cold hand was placed on her shoulder. The pink sky had disappeared behind the clouds.
“We came as soon as we could.”
“The funeral’s over.” She looked at the hand on her shoulder and slowly turned around to see three familiar faces. “Everyone has gone.”
“Anna, dear, I’m so sorry.” The woman promptly put her arms around the girl and squeezed tightly. “I cannot believe this happened. Your parents were such good people.” She let go of her embrace and took Anna’s hands in hers. After a moment of silence, the woman let out a breath, “I promise things will get better.”
“Thank you, Mrs. Malfoy.” Anna couldn’t hold in the tears any longer. The Malfoy’s were her parents’ oldest friends and seeing them brought back countless memories. Anna looked over to the rigid boy standing next to his father, same blonde hair as she remembered him by. Although their families had known each other for quite a long time, Anna almost never saw their son, Draco. Anna’s family had moved to France when she was a young girl and she had attended Beauxbatons Academy of Magic for five years while Draco attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Draco stared at the ground, unable to meet Anna’s eyes. Lucius Malfoy cleared his throat, “We’ve come to take you home. I have spoken to the authorities about your situation-.”
“My situation?” Anna knew the plan; it had been explained to her at least four times amid the preparations of her parents’ funeral. She was to live with her neighbors, Mr. and Mrs. Aldrich, whom were good friends of her parents. Anna had no living relatives left that she knew of.
“It appears that Mr. and Mrs. Aldrich do not have sufficient means of raising another child under their roof.” Lucius paused for a moment waiting for Anna to say something, but when she didn’t he stood up straighter and lifted his chin slightly. “They don’t have enough money.” He spit the words out sharply.
“I know what it means,” Anna said quickly. She looked down as a drop of rain fell on the leaf lying below her. The wind blew harder than it had before causing hundreds of darkening leaves to fly off their branches. Anna followed them with her eyes. The seasons were changing; her life was changing. “And what will become of me?”
Narcissa Malfoy smiled gently, “You will come live with us. We would be honored to have you. I think your parents would have wanted it this way.” She moved forward and spread her arms open as she embraced Anna in a hug, engulfing her in the black robes Narcissa was wearing. “Everything is going to turn out fine.” She squeezed her eyes shut pushing out one tear. Her eyes opened, her smile faded, and her gaze turned into a blank stare and she let Anna go and returned to her family. “We’ll be waiting at the house for you to pack your things.” Narcissa and Lucius turned and walked slowly out of the graveyard discussing something quietly.
Draco couldn’t find words. He was ashamed of himself, of what he was to do. Anna had no idea. “I-I…um…I’m…”
“You don’t have to say anything.” She wanted to sound strong but her words came out in whispers paired with tears welling in her eyes. “I just don’t understand how this happened.”
Draco looked away when their eyes met. “I wish I knew what to say.” The sympathy in Draco’s voice surprised even himself. He had never been put in this situation.
Thunder rumbled above them and finally the sinister clouds relieved the rain that had been building up inside. It poured down almost instantly. Anna didn’t move; this was what she wanted. She cried, and cried, and cried, as the tears mixed with the rain. It was the perfect cover to her sadness. She didn’t know what were tears and what was rain anymore, she just let it out.
Draco slowly raised his hand and waited for Anna to take it so he could lead her away from all this grief. Anna took one last look back at her parents’ grave, at the rose she placed at the foot of the gravestone, and at the foggy French landscape that she would soon be leaving. She turned back to Draco and looked at him, and for the first time Draco didn’t look away. She put her hand in his and he led her away from her troubles, her sorrow, her pain if only for a moment. _________________ yeah he's a looker, but i really think it's guts that matter most.
