|
|
In Chapter 30 (the sacking of Severus Snape) we read:
| Quote: |
"He jumped," said Professor McGonagall as Harry and Luna ran into the room.
"You means he's dead?" Harry sprinted to the window, ignoring Flitwick's and Sprout's yells of shock at his sudden appearance.
"No, he's not dead," said McGonagall bitterly. "Unlike Dumbledore, he was still carrying a wand. . . and he seems to have learned a few tricks from his master."
With a tingle of horror, Harry saw in the distance a huge, batlike shape flying through the darkness toward the perimeter wall. |
From the above it seems to be understood (as would be obvious) that one requires a wand to be able to fly, at least according to McGonagall's understanding.
However, in chapter 4 (the seven Potters) we read:
| Quote: |
As the pain from Harry's scar forced his eyes shut, his wand acted of its own accord. He felt it drag his hand around like some great magnet, saw a spurt of golden fire through his half-closed eyelids, heard a crack and a scream of fury. the remaining Death Eater yelled; Voldemort screamed, "No!"; Somehow, Harry found his nose an inch from the dragon-fire button. He punched it with his wand-free hand and the bike shot more flames into the air, hurtling straight toward the ground.
"Hagrid!" Harry called, holding on to the bike for dear life. "Hagrid—Accio Hagrid!"
The motorbike sped up, sucked towards the earth. Face level with the handlebars, Harry could see nothing but distant lights growing nearer and nearer. He was going to crash and there was nothing he could do about it. Behind him came another scream, "Your wand, Selwyn, give me your wand!" |
But Voldemort's (Malfoy's) wand was snapped so how did he stay in the air? (Unless he can indeed fly without a wand?) |

I'm not sure McGonagall was speaking about Snape's flying. I think she was referring to the fact that Snape escaped alive, unlike DD who didn't due largely to his lack of a wand. Afterall, DD didn't know how to fly, anyway. And he was killed before he went falling off the tower, so his wand wouldn't have helped him to fly, anyway.
Maybe that was why Voldemort was yelling to Selwyn for his wand, because he was about to fall himself. Another DE could have caught him mid-air, too. _________________

| You're probably right, although Dumbledore surely did know how to fly (could Snape know spells that Dumbledore does't??? I don't think it's dark magic...) but as you pointed out, he was killed before he fell. |

Actually I doubt DD knew how to fly. In HBP he had Harry summon broomsticks for them to use. If he could fly, that would have been a good time to do so.
I don't think it's dark magic either, though. _________________

I think Snape knew things that DD didn`t. Lots of dark stuff... _________________

How awkward would that be, a Death Eater carrying Voldemort on their broom. _________________

Yes, I think he`d rather be defeated by Harry than experience the horror and embarrassment of having to fly on a broom. _________________

Maybe he couldn't since he was weakened at the time and preferred to use a broomstick rather than risk passing out in midair.

True, but I doubt flying is considered dark magic. |

Just because DD couldn't fly doesn't mean he wouldn't.
We don't know that flying is dark magic. Just because DD didn't fly doesn't mean flying is dark magic, it could just mean that he didn't know how to fly.
I'm not saying that flying is definitely not dark magic, it very well could be. But we don't know that it is for a fact. _________________
