Philosopher's Stone was the British verison when the 1st book came out...for some reason ( I'm not sure of) When it came to America they changed it to the Sorceror's Stone.

i think it is because philosopher in america means like a great thinker, like socrates. sorcerer means creater of magic, so i beat in england (people on then other side of the puddle help me out) philosopher has to do with creating magic, not great thinker, or maybe both

"Philosophy is a field of study in which people question, and create theories about, the nature of reality. It includes diverse subfields such as aesthetics, epistemology, ontology, ethics, logic, and metaphysics; pondering such fundemental mysteries as whether God exists, what is the nature of being and the universe, whether any true knowledge is possible, and what makes actions right or wrong. The fundamental method of western philosophy is the use of reasoning to evaluate arguments concerning these questions. However, the exact scope and methodology of philosophy is not rigid. What counts as philosophy is itself debated and varies across philosophical and cultural traditions."

basically, it's to do with flammel creating the stone, nothing to do with magic.

i see why she changed the title, we hardly knew anything of Nicholas Flamel other than he created the stone and helped Dumbledore out. We don't even know what his philosophy is.

When I pick up a book to read, I want the title to be appealing, though.

"The title was changed because Scholastic thought that a child wouldn't buy a book with the word "philosopher" in the title"

http://www.hp-lexicon.org/about/books/ps/book_ss.html

And the sad thing is, they might have been correct. Not only do most American children not know what a philosopher is, but I don't know any child that knows what a Philosopher's Stone is. But a sorcerer... that they know.

I think Sorcerers Stone sounds better although I prefer it being called the Philosophers Stone because thats what my copy was called (I'm British).

I was about 11 i think when i read it and i didnt know what it was, but i read and I learnt Laughing

I bought it because it said Harry Potter on it and I'd heard about it, I dont think i even looked at the full title Surprised

I prefer the original title, in South Africa it is also Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.

Philosophers Stone sounds better. Sorcerers Stone sounds more like a 5 year olds book but I can see why they changed it.
