As an answer to 3.
I believe that that wasn't the real Snape (I agree with the DIATSSISE theory)... He simply had to do it to keep his cover and that's why he died.

Hmmm, never thought about this. Maybe he was trying to stop Quirrel from actually getting past Fluffy, but got attacked in the process?

i think snape was trying to steal the stone for himself... although conveniently the blame was put on quirrell

but quirell had not yet gone past fluffy... so why would snape go there? its not like as if he's following him coz quirrell couldnt have been there to begin with, since he didnt know how to fight off fluffy yet.
naturally, if he couldnt fight fluffy yet, he wouldnt be going there.
so what was snape doing there?

snape was trying to stop quirrel, and lord knows wether filch is good or bad. he's somewhere inbetween.
