you think its because he heard the snake moving around? if so, then why hadnt harry heard it in his first year. being able to understand parseltongue, he would have been able to hear the snake as early as his first year.

I think Tom went hunting for it. I think he was just so certain it was there so he didn't just look for it, he probably investigated every place, every corner of the castle that others hadn't bothered. Because Prof Binns said that some has searched the for the chamber, but most people didn't think it existed anyway. It's like hunting for ghosts when you don't even believe in them.

And yeah, it is very possible that Harry didn't hear teh baslilisk in his first year. It was probably chilling in the chamber, taking a nap. Only until Ginny opened the chamber did the beast reawaken, ready to kill again.

The chamber itself wasn't a secret. It's apparantly mentioned in Hogwarts, A History. But it was written off as a legend.

Well, I would assume there wasn't always a girls bathroom on that spot. Indoor plumbing was actually possible back then, but not very common at all. And certainly not like that, with the set-up of sinks and mirrors and such. Perhaps Tom knew of a change in the layout. Also, I wouldnt' put it past him to have charmed a few of the castle denizens into talking about some of it. Afterall, he was able to get the Grey lady to speak of the diadem.

He didn't hear it in his first year because the chamber wasn't open yet, right?

He probably preformed a disillusionment charm (or used an invisibility cloak), allowing him to explore the bathroom undetected.

Interesting how Salazar Slytherin hid the entrance to the chamber in a bathroom and carved the snake image on the tap, when there was no such think in his time... Could one of his descendents have upgraded it? (In Riddle's time the bathroom definitely existed, as Moaning Myrtle states explicitly).

It's also interesting that wizards use muggle plumbing (I mean, if Arthur Weasly gets all excited about plugs and batteries...). Perhaps magical plumbing was actually invented by wizards centuries ago and the muggles just copied it! Razz That would definitely explain it!

Indoor plumbing has actually existed for a longer time than most people think, it just wasn't in widespread use.
And most of what muggles have are copies of what wizards have. Muggles have had to learn to deal with thigns without the use of magic. Most likely wizardxs didn't come up with plumbing, but the muggles added on gadgets and gizmos so the plumbing would be able to work without the use of magic.

I'm agreeing with you. I'm just saying, maybe there was some sort of magical intervention even he wasn't aware of.. not magical.. that's not the right word. Maybe, like a sixth sense? Kind of like when I walk into a book store and I instinctivley know where the Harry Potter stuff is. It's like a can sniff it out or something. And i don't mean like the books themselves... I always know exactly where the other stuff is, the bookmarks, the games, the cards, the fanbooks... I don't even have to look for them, I just naturally walk right up to it.

Slytherin made the chamber, and he's Voldy's ancestor. Coincedence? Me no think so.

i think that voldy looked just as hard as dumble and others headmasters for the chamber, but being the only one who could speak parsel, he was the only one able to open it

no one told him how to get there, neither was he attracted to it
