In this chapter, Harry receives the infamous Invisibility Cloak accompanied by this note:
Your father left this in my possession before he died. It is time it was returned to you. Use it well.

JKR already drew attention to this, saying that it is crucial to know why the Cloak was in Dumbledore's possession, considering he didn't need it. He said it himself later on in the chapter:
"I don't need a cloak to become invisible," said Dumbledore gently
SO DD CAN BECOME INVISIBLE WHEN HE WANTS TO? THAT’S THE MOST I CAN GLEAN FROM IT. I DUNNO IF THAT’S GONNA BE CONSEQUENTIAL THOUGH. BUT THAT’S STUPID. WHY WOULD HE LEAVE HARRY THERE FOR HAGRID TO GET? HE MIGHT AS WELL HAVE GOTTEN THE SCREAMING BABY WITH THE SCAR ON HIS HEAD. SO I HIGHLY DOUBT THAT DD WENT TO GODRIC’S HOLLOW. AND BESIDES, OF ALL THINGS TO GET, WHY THE CLOAK? AND FURTHERMORE, HE SAID THAT JAMES LEFT IT IN HIS POSSESSION. SO HE DID NOT GET IT. IT WAS GIVEN TO HIM. SO THE QUESTION IS, WHY DID JAMES LEAVE IT TO HIM?

This is also the chapter where Harry first sees the Mirror of Erised. On the second night he sneaks out to look at the Mirror, he brings Ron along. And on the third night, Harry runs into Dumbledore, who has been observing him for three nights now. Really fantastic, that Dumbledore. How does he know Harry is going to the room with the Mirror? I know he doesn't need it, but wouldn't it be funny to see Dumbledore poring over a Marauders' Map?
The Mirror will be moved to a new home tomorrow, Harry, and I ask you not to go looking for it again. If you ever do run across it, you will now be prepared.
Why does it sound like Dumbledore almost is preparing Harry to use the Mirror?

socks sort of symbolize freedom. and true enough, what was once a smelly old sock turned out to be dobby's ticket to freedom.
so might dumbledore be wanting to see himself free, free from all the weighty responsibilities? after all, he is a very simple man who is content with lemon drops. _________________

yes, i think it meant that he can become invisable whenever he wants to.
he would've known that ron could see himself becoming head boy because ron was talking about it when he was looking at himself (he said "i'm head boy.. i'm quidditch captain, too!" that's how harry figured out, so i think thats how dumbledore figured out. i might be wrong, though. he is the most powerful wizard, so, he could find his ways.
the cloak was in dumbledore's possession because james gave it to him before he died. maybe he found no use for it anymore, so he gave it to dumbledore.
dumbledore said he trusts hagrid with his life, so i'm sure that dumbledore made hagrid get harry because he trusted him. why dumbledore didn't get him, i'm not sure.
i already answered why james would give dumbledore the cloak, because he found no use for it and gave it to someone he could trust, who was dumbledore.
dumbledore is the most powerful wizard known to modern time, i'm sure he can figure out where harry is and come and watch him while he's invisable.
for harry being prepared, i think he meant that it would be where quirrel/voldemort was, and dumbledore knew that harry would try to stop quirrel (but at the beginning, harry thought he'd be stopping snape), and he meant that he was prepared to fight voldemort in that battle they had at the end.
the mirror.. hm, that's a hard question to answer. it wasn't broken or anything, so i'm sure it could be reused.. but, that's debateable. nah, i don't think we'll see it in the future, unless there's a twist in the last book.

I think in book 7 that dumbledore did not see socks in the mirror that he was covering up for what he really saw.....i got the impression somewhere in the book that dumbledore may have seen his family in there much the same as harry did. Nice theory about the socks tho i never made that connection.

yes dumbledore most liekly saw at least ariana alive because he felt guilty. and dd got the cloak because he was examing it because it was one of the hollows and he was curious after all those years!
