Well, you can start with the classics like Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball Z. But it also depends on what genre you like.

"Classics"

they're just some that are broad casted on American Media.
More like just Popular and not really "classic"

Not to get all mean about it, but I at least consider them classics. And your comment made me feel like mine was not important. And on the subject of more manga and anime to try out here are some more:

Loveless was pretty small as well. It's about 12 episodes.
Just be warned that there is no sexual discrimination in that anime. There is boys dating boys and girls dating girls. So yeah..
