I think they are always animals. Afterall, they are almost always described as moving in someway... I can't really see a chair charging towards a dementor. |

| I think Voldemort has a Patronus like the other wizards and it is a giant snake. Voldemort has a strong connection with snakes. I think a giant snake is suitable for his Patronus. |

If you observe closely when the students secretly practice conjuring their patronae in the Room of Requirement, Ginny Weasley conjures a horse, not a swan.
In the books and in the movies it's stated that all patronus manifestations are totem animals, guardians. I find it interesting that Harry conjures a Stag while Snape conjures a Doe. _________________ Walking on water is hard but running is easy. The greatest wand is in yourself, not your hand. |

1. Guessing from house symbols
Godric Gryffindor -- lion (gold on scarlet) (Luna's roaring hat)
Helga Hufflepuff -- badger (black on yellow)
Rowena Ravenclaw -- eagle (saying "nicely cast!") (bronze on blue) (a bronze knocker in the shape of an eagle)
2. Guessing from Animagi form
Dunno if there's any correlation between an Animagus's form and his/her Patronus. The rationale in favor could be that they both spring from a deeper affinity for one kind of animal. If so, then McGonagall = tabby cat, etc.
3. Having some fun
Tom Marvolo Riddle -- magpie (steals shiny objects)
Cornelius Fudge -- ostrich
Professor Filius Flitwick -- blue whale
Professor Rubeus Hagrid -- dormouse (dragon is too obvious)
Professor Alastor Moody -- chameleon (it's all in the eyeballs)
Professor Gilderoy Lockhart: himself (peacock if you insist on animal)

Oh, duh. Minerva McGonagall's is indeed:

Eagle's head: Which came first, the Patronus or the Animagus form?
McGonagall: Oh, for heaven's sake. The beloved pet came before them both!
Eagle's head: Well spoken! (door opens)
