We know that Voldemort's wand was Yew, Phoenix Feather, 13.5 inches.
Harry's was Holly, Phoenix Feather, 11 inches
Lily's was Willow, 10 1/4 inches, no specified core
James's was Mahogany, 11 inches, no specified core
In her website, JKR said that
I gave Harry a wand made of holly wood back in 1990, when I first drafted chapter six of ‘Philosopher’s Stone’. It was not an arbitrary decision: holly has certain connotations that were perfect for Harry, particularly when contrasted with the traditional associations of yew, from which Voldemort’s wand is made. European tradition has it that the holly tree (the name comes from ‘holy’) repels evil, while yew, which can achieve astonishing longevity (there are British yew trees over two thousand years old), can symbolise both death and resurrection; the sap is also poisonous.
She also mentioned that she later found a Celtic system for assigning trees to one's birthdate. Fortunately, she got Harry's right. Eventually, she also used the system to assign Ron and Hermione's wands, but those of the other characters did not match the system. Here's the Celtic system:
December 24 - January 20 = Birch (Beth)
January 21 - February 17 = Rowan (Luis)
February 18 - March 17 = Ash (Nion)
March 18 - April 14 = Alder (Fearn)
April 15 - May 12 = Willow (Saille)
May 13 - June 9 = Hawthorn (Huath)
June 10 - July 7 = Oak (Duir)
July 8 - August 4 = Holly (Tinne)
August 5 - September 1 = Hazel (Coll)
September 2 - September 29 = Vine (Muin)
September 30 - October 27 = Ivy (Gort)
October 28 - November 24 = Reed (Ngetal)
November 25 - December 23 = Elder (Ruis)
OKAY, SO NOW I GET THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE WOOD USED. BUT I WANNA KNOW ABOUT THE CORE OF THE WANDS. WHAT IS WITH PHOENIX FEATHER THAT VOLDIE AND HARRY HAVE THEM. FURTHERMORE, WHY DO THEY HAVE THE SAME WAND?
AND I THOUGHT RON WAS BORN MARCH 1? I THINK IT SAYS SO IN HBP. I DON’T THINK HIS WAND IS ASH. I THINK ITS WILLOW.
IS THERE ANY SIGNIFICANCE WITH REGARDS TO LENGTH? A LONG WAND SOUNDS MORE POWERFUL THAN A SHORT ONE. OR DOES IT JUST CORRESPOND TO THE LENGTH OF ONE’S ARMS, WHICH WOULD EXPLAIN WHY LILY’S IS THE SHORTEST (BEING FEMALE, I GUESS SHE HAS SHORTER FOREARMS) AND HAGRID’S THE LONGEST (16 INCHES).
OH YEAH, WHAT IS DD’S WAND MADE OF? PHOENIX FEATHER, I PRESUME? BUT ITS PROBABLY NOT FAWKES’, SINCE OLLIVANDER SAID THAT FAWKES GAVE ONLY TWO FEATEHRS – ONE TO VOLDIE AND ONE TO HARRY.
Take special note that Ron's wand was originally ash, but broke and so was replaced with a Willow wand. I would have made more sense had it been the other way around. Especially since the first wand was a hand-me-down from his brother, so really the wand didn't choose him, it was forced on him.
And I remember reading somewhere that the size of the wand has to do with the size of the person... as in Umbridge's was especially short. _________________ Blame it on a simple twist of fate. ~ Bob Dylan
I think it also may have to do with finger length. voldy is described with long fingers...his wand is long. Umbridge has short stubby fingers, her wand is too. But height could work too...so could arm length. What do you think was up with all the measuring in the chapter? didn't it measure between his nostrils or something like that? It was probably just for comedic effect...but I'm sure somebody could come up with a complex theory to support it.
my wand would be made of vine! is vine a very sturdy wood? it must be if they use it. ooo thats hermione's! well it would be...our birthdays are around the same time heh.
and Ollivander...maker of fine wands since 382 b.c. Do you think its a family business, or has it been the one Ollivander all along? and if so how could he possibly remember all the wands he'd ever made? Just within a normal life span is amazing enough! _________________ They say home is where the heart is, so your real home's in your chest. --Captain Hammer
Dumbledore is old and 150ish, yet madam marshbanks tested him for his OWLS, so wizards and witches can live to be much older than dd. Though a life span of 360bc-1997ishad is crazy. But yet there's something crazy and mysterious about the guy that makes me think he might be that old...maybe his has his own stone? _________________ They say home is where the heart is, so your real home's in your chest. --Captain Hammer
I'm going to sound really luna-ish here...I know its really absurd and unlikely...but thats what the vibes tell me. *shrug* I wont argue though, because I have no evidence. _________________ They say home is where the heart is, so your real home's in your chest. --Captain Hammer
but the age range of the oldies would ahve to be around at most 200.
being born in 350 BC is like being 1150 years old.
Thats the worst bit of maths i have eva seen lol. Surely u mean 2350+ yrs .................... or am i missing something. _________________ 'Valhalla Awaits'

AND WHAT IS SNAPE’S WAND MADE OF?
Well this is only part spoiler buit I'll put it all in one:
Spoiler:
Okay someone made a post sayng the longer the wand the larger the height, because umbridge had a small one and ron had a longer one. SO thats probably where the length comes form, it most likely has nothing to do with power. and now we noe dumbledore had the elder wand.
i believe in the birthday thing, except that ron should've had willow forced on him, and recieved ash. seeing as ron had a long wand, and umbridge a short one, i definately think it's based on your height or size or something like that.
by the way, this is my 400th post. _________________ www.theboywholivedd.piczo.com
