Lily, definately. He doesn't have to love her son to love her. I'm guessing he in fact loathed Harry because Harry looks so much like James, a memory of the man who had Lily instead of himself, and moreover for the fact that Harry is a living representative of something he would never acheive with Lily--a family.

The love was definitely for Lily. Although I was hoping that Snape would mature and eventually be a little more caring towards Harry. The closest he came to that was not screaming at Harry, for not saving him from Nagini. He made sure that Harry saw the truth through his memories, which was one of my favorite parts because the memories take you through all the books and for those of us cheering for Snape to be a good guy; we were justified. Anyway, I guess whichever teacher JK had in mind when she wrote Snape must have really made a bad impression.

You know that teacher is out there somewhere thinking, "This Snape character better not be me! ...I'll get that J.K. Rowling if its the last thing I do!"

This is my explaination. Snape was on DD's side but he had to keep going back to Volomort to get keen information. So Snape acted like he loathed Harry to keep his word good to Volomort because there was usually someone else in Hogwarts on the Dark side. But i really do think Snape loved Harry.

Well Harry was Lily and James' son. Snape loved Lily, Snape hated James.

Harry very much resembled James, so wouldn't it be natural for Snape to hate him? Maybe if Harry was female, Snape wouldn't mind him(her) so much...but then the prophecy wouldn't have been made or anything like that.

Lily! Of course. Snape`s patronus was a doe, as Lily`s. Because he loved her and when she died that`s when Severus "inherited" her patronus. That wasn`t Harry`s patronus!

why would he love harry? he has no reason to. he only cares about harry as an extension of lily. care for the boy to make sure lily did not die in vain. but he doesnt really love harry.

IMO he only loved Lily. The reason he did it, is because he not only saw Lily's eyes (through Harry) pretty much everyday, but she was the only person he truley loved. So he protected her son for her, kind of.

I don't know, it's just my opinion. He couldn't of liked Harry too much though, I mean, he technically sees James, even if Harry did have his mother's eyes.

Just last night i was rereading in book 7 the part with snape memories and i noticed something very interesting that i dont know if anyone has noticed.

Among all the memories snape gives harry before he dies, he includes one apparently from harry's first year where snape's complaining about harry to dumbledore, saying that he's arrogant, just like his father, you know, the usual. And then dumble says with an air of one that is repeating himself for the hundreadth time that he's just seeing what he expects to see and that harry is a nice kid.

Now, why on earth would snape show this memory to harry? It certainly wouldnt have helped harry to believe he was on the good side, it just made him look like a guy who refuses to see the truth and just sees what he wants. So why did he include that memory?

I think he did so because, at least at the very end of his life, he realised that he had been wrong in being a jerk to harry and that he didnt deserve it. I think at the very end, deep down, he didnt hate harry and he felt at least a bit gilty about the way he had treated him, and even went as far as wanting to show this to harry, to let him know that he knew he had been wrong.

Of course, he only showed that memory to harry because he knew he was going to die so i guess he figured he got nothing to loose. There's no chance in hell he would have told harry he had been wrong face to face.

He never got to actually like harry or even close to that, but at least he wasnt totally blind or a total jerk, he realised his mistake, if too late.

I think it was obvious that Snape loved Lily, not Harry. Snape always hated James and he behaved Harry badly because of his similarities. Did Snape love Harry? Well, I don't think so. He might have at least a respect because of Lily and that's all.

Lily

He hated Harry because he was more like James, who ripped Lily away from him, but it was that his eyes were like Lily's that made him not want to harm him.

But he loved Lily far more than Harry, even though she was muggleborn, and he was a complete jerk to Hermione.

James should have been the Potions Master and Snape could be Harry's father, Lol, but Snape would have been killed. Or Harry could have been named, Snivellus Prince Snape, lol.

You, who call themselves fans. If you really read Harry Potter, you'll see the countless times Snape saves or try to save Harry and his friends. A recent one; book 6 or 7: he sends Ginny and the others to detentention with Hagrid! Mind you, even Harry says that isn't a punishment at all.

I voted for Lily only. I think Snape liked Harry but also hated him, because he saw a little bit of James in him, and yet he was Lily's son. Remember this scene:

He loved Lily. Harry was only an extension of Lily, albeit with a lot of James' attributes, which were nasty reminders of how much he hated James. He protected Harry out of respect and love for Lily. He never was fond of Harry, and certainly didn't love him.

I bet he did like him. At least a tiny bit. He wanted to do great things and Harry was doing great things so he kinda respected Harry, I think. Although he would rather die than tell anyone that. Very Happy
