I keep reading these fanfic that state that Draco is extremely smart and if it was not for Hermoine he would have the top grades Question

Is there anything in the books referencing this? All I remember is Lucious telling Malfoy he let a Hermoine get better grades than him.

smart because aunt bellatrix taught him stuff like occlumency and the unforgiveable curses. but yeah he's quite smart too... to think of that vanishing cabinet.

but wait! that happened in book 5, when montague got lost in that cabinet. and while everyone thought it was hilarious, he was already devicing a plan for people to come into hogwarts. you dont think that voldie had recruited malfoy since book5? or maybe malfoy was just planning it since book5, and then declared his allegiance book6?

oh btw... in book2, when harry was caught by filch when harry found out he was a squib, filch said something like peeves was destroying the vanishing cabinet. so there! it got destroyed because of peeves. now malfoy was trying to repair it come book 6.

thanks starfloater. i think cos has a lot to do with hbp, which was why i went back to it after reading hbp. in borgin's store you have the locket which cursed katie bell, you have the hand of glory, and im pretty sure that the cabinet harry hid in when malfoy entered the store was the vanishing cabinet. the only reason why harry didnt vanish was because he did not close it completely, so that he could hear what the malfoys were saying. and it wasnt broken at that time yet, i think.

Draco is definatly not smart. I would look for examples of him being stupid but I'm too lazy. I think he only was good at occulemency because he was hiding his feelings. That doesn't require much intelligence.

Isn't he allowed to be intelligent in some respects and not in others? Confused

We know he is a good enough student, having achieved high enough grades to resume taking certain classes. And he is obviously the "brains behind the operation" when it comes ot his gang of Slytherins. We know Draco mentioned Hermione to his dad is the form of grades, so grades are important in his household. And since he has more to answer to than just the Dursleys, then I'm sure he applies himself in his classes.

Whether or not Draco is naturally smart, naturally talented, or studies his butt off is very argueable. In HBP his potions towards the end of the year takes a noticable dowslide. Is this because Snape is no longer supporting him in otions class or is it because he is so overwhelmed with fixing the cabinet that he has't been studying like he should? Or is he just too concerned with his big plan to care about his Potions grade? When they have the contest for the Felix Felicis, Harry notices Draco working hard, probably hoping to earn that bit of good luck. So it is safe to assume that Draco did not recieve a minimum of E in Potions with Snape's help alone.

Draco was put into Slytherin for a reason, besides the pure-blood thing, he is cunning and will use any means to achieve his ends, including murder, even if he didn't go through with it, he did seriously consider it. After Montague was stuffed into the broken cabinent it was Draco who caught on to what it's purpose was. So he is crafty and smart.

My guess is that Draco isn't necessarily a genius, but he is certainly not dumb. And his grades were most likely deserved, whether the work comes easy for him or if he studies.

What qualifies a person to be prefect? Is it based on grades, preformance, or behavior? Either way, he is certainly not dumb.

Malfoy is defiantly smart... but I have feeling that he is more hands on smart than book smart compared to some people. I'm sure he isnt second best to Hermione and that there is a few Ravenclaws that beat him in that category, but when it comes to grades he probably has way higher grades that Harry and Ron.
